Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 3rd December 2021

CALVES AND WEANLINGS

In the calf ring today there was an entry of 61 forward, selling to a very two tiered trade, weanlings and good quality calves continue to be a very strong trade and in big demand, with the next grade of calf down less money. Hereford weanlings bulls at three month old sold to £450 twice, £430 and £400, with heifers to £310 and £295 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. A consignment of weanling British Blues from J&G Thornley, Kirkham sold to £445, £440 and £420, with heifer calves from the same home selling to £380. British Blue bull calves sold to £405 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Other British Blue bulls sold to £375 twice and £365 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. The next grade down of calves regularly sold in the two hundreds. Black and White weanling from RE&P Miller, Barnacre sold to £230 and £170, with Black and White rearing calves selling to £120 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale.
A big entry of calves are already pre booked in for next weeks Christmas Show, all show calves are to be penned by 9.15am.

STORE CATTLE

Once again, this week saw a sharper trade for store cattle, with more short keep cattle forward on the market. This weeks sale topper at £1480 was an consignment of Aberdeen Angus bullocks from Pilling Hall, Pilling. This was followed by a pair of Limousin bullocks selling to £1470 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton with other Continental bullocks to £1440 for British Blues from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse. Followed by a pen of three Limousin bullocks to £1430 from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham. Plenty more pens of strong Continental bullocks sold in excess of the £1400 mark. Dairy bullocks peaked at £1450 for Montbeliardes from JM&AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. The consignment from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse saw Montbeliarde bullocks to £1420 and Fleckvieh to £1410. Black and White bullocks peaked at £1240 from TM Gardner, Tatham.
The heifer trade this week topped at £1370 from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland with a Limousin, followed by £1360 for a Charolais heifer from WA Hodgson, Kendal. Native heifers topped at £1300 from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall, with other Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1280 from G Sagar & Son, Caton. Dairy heifers peaked at £1210 for Montbeliardes from C&B Cummings & Son, Preesall.
Next weeks sale included the Christmas Show for pairs of store bullocks and heifers, show cattle need to be penned by 9.15am.

OTM CATTLE

There was an entry of 99 cast cows forward today with a planner offering forward but with all types of cows a sharper price, except the small leaner types. An Aberdeen Angus cast steer led the way selling to 229.5p/kg or £1319 from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn. This was closely followed by a young Limousin cow to 217.5p/kg from F&JM Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale, who also sold British Blue OTM heifers to 209.5p/kg. Dairy OTM heifers peaked at 184.5p/kg or £1234 from MJ Fell, Whittington, with plenty more selling round the 180p/kg mark. Best fleshed dairy cows sold to 147.5p/kg numerous times, peaking at £1194 from RT Halhead, Cockerham with others from the same home selling to £1083. Plenty of dairy cows today sold in excess of the £1000 mark.
