Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 13th August 2021

CALVES AND WEANLINGS

Lancaster continues to have a buoyant trade for calves, all types and sizes are openly welcome at Lancaster auction, with no discrimination against any sizes here! Leading the way this week was a 10-week-old British Blue calf from J&G Thornley, Kirkham selling to £560, with British Blue heifers from the same home selling to £430. The consignment of British Blue bulls from G & ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel sold to £440. British Blue heifers sold to £425 from Wannop Farm, Heaton-with- Oxcliffe with Charolais heifers from the same home selling to £385. Other noted prices for British Blue heifers were £415 from CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton. Angus bull calves sold to a top of £390 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Dairy bull calves sold to a top of £350 for Fleckviehs from R & J Dodgson, Natland. Black and White bull calves topped at £100 twice from Wallbank Farms. 3 ½ -4-month-old Holstein bulls sold to £350 and £340 from Hannah Kent, Cockerham.

STORE CATTLE

The short keep cattle trade today was as strong as ever with more desperately needed to fulfil our busy ring of buyer’s orders. The market topped at a very impressive £1650 from for a Hereford bullock from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. This was closely followed by a consignment of beef Shorthorn bullocks from GR & A Foy, Conder Green selling to £1570 and £1520 with others from the same home to £1450. A strong trade all round for native cattle in Lancaster saw a pen of three Angus bullocks sell to £1480 from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine. With a pen of three Hereford bullocks from JD & GM Bracken, Catterall sell to £1460. Other noted prices for Angus bullocks was £1400 from M Allen, Carnforth.
Continental bullocks twice sold to £1400 firstly for Limousins from CE & MA Hewitt, Forton with Limousin bullocks from J&O Galbriaith & Son, Endmoor achieving the same price. Plenty of bullocks today easily selling in excess of the £1300 mark.
The heifer trade today topped at £1340 for a pen of three British Blues from KH & D Holden & Son, Pilling with Angus heifers from the same home topping at £1290. Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1300 for Black and Whites from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Montbeliardes achieving £1280 from MJ Waller, Lupton.

OTM CATTLE

The weekly sale of cast cows had 85 forward selling to an overall market average of 142p/kg, with a larger quantity of parlour cows on the market. OTM steers led the way selling to 199.5p/kg from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling. A strong trade and demand for beef cows on the market today, saw a Limousin cow sell to 194.5p/kg from AT Rogerson, Chipping that grossed at an impressive £1556. Also achieving 194.5p/kg was a Limousin cow from E Dodgson, Kendal which gross at £1356. This was closely followed by a Stablier cow selling to 189p/kg from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens whos consignment of cows topped at £1525. Black and white OTM heifers continued to meet plenty of demand, with well meated ones regularly selling around the 180p/kg mark. With these topping £1150 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Best dairy cows today sold to the region of 170p/kg, these topping at £1385 for a Holstein Friesian from AW&AM Park & Sons, Ellel followed by other Friesian cows to £1235 from Pilling Hall, Pilling followed by £1222 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Fleckvieh cows sold to £1286 from B&AC Barnes, Kirkby Lonsdale. Cast bulls sold to a top of £1512 for Fleckviehs from J&AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. With Herefords to £1436 from B&BA Rimmer, Scorton.
