Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM Cattle and Store Cattle - Friday 30 April 2021

Calves and Stirks

Lancasters weekly sale of calves had an entry of 107 forward, with as many as any other auction market in the area and more than most! The trade was as sharp as seen for some time in which more could have easily been sold, to the sellers’ advantage. British Blue bull weanlings sold to £590 and £570 from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. Other noted prices for British Blue weanlings were £540 from JT & B Fox, Quernmore. Other weanlings saw Limousins bulls sell to £550 and £540 from B&MJ Nelson & Son, Heversham with Limousin heifers from the same home to £530.
Pure Limousin bull calves topped the calf trade, selling to £540 from JM & JJ Dawson, Littledale. British Blue bull calves sold to £430 from AD & R Milner, Claughton-on-Brock. Plenty of beef calves selling in the mid to late £300. Black and white weanlings sold to £330 from RA & P Miller, Barnacre. Dairy bull calves sold to £300 for Fleckvieh from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Black and White bull calves topped at £205 from W&G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton-on-Brock.
Lancasters monthly sale of stirks continues to grow from strength to strength, with a strong entry of 207 forward. Good grazing type bullocks met strong demand in which more could have easily been sold. With the trade very strong for well done 5-to-6-month-old stirks. There was a large number of heifers in the market today with buyers being slightly more selective on yearling softer heifers but still looking well sold. There was not as many buyers forward as some times seen at Lancaster for the stirk sales, with the grass being slow to grow but we have many buyers in waiting and once the grass starts to grow, they will be back ring side. So do not hesitate to enter for the next sale.
The trade topped at £900 numerous times, firstly for a pen of three yearling Hereford bullocks from B & BA Rimmer, Scorton this was followed by a yearling British Blues from I Atkinson & Son, Carnforth. Also achieving £900 was 10-month-old British Blues from DJ Townley, Lancaster and finally selling to £900 were Shorthorn bullocks from Sam Ayrton, Thurnham. Yearling Limousin bullocks sold to £890 from John Pye, Stalmine. Plenty of yearling bullocks easily sold in excess of the £800 mark. Heifer trade peaked at £850 for Simmentals from CD & HL Mason, Caton Green. Angus heifers sold to £835 from Sam Ayrton, with others selling to £830 from D&N David, Nateby. Yearling British Blue heifers topped at £810 for a pen of seven from P Rossall, Claughton-on-Brock. Black and White bullocks peaked at £730 from GI&M Faraday, Bleasdale with others from the same home selling to £720.

OTM Cattle

Lancaster continued to have a very buoyant trade for cast cows and OTM cattle, selling to an overall market average of 139p/kg, plenty of young fit cattle easily selling over the 200 p/kg mark. With cast steers selling to 204.05p/kg or £1537 for British Blues from J Bargh, Heaton-With-Oxcliffe who also sold Shorthorn bullocks to £1537. Simmental heifers sold to 204.05 p/kg from RJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. OTM Frisian heifers sold to 199.5p/kg or £1402 from AT Burrow & Son, Hornby with other to 194.5p/kg or £1273 from R&A Jolleys, Cabus. Young Angus cows sold to 194.5 p/kg or £1322 from Norbreck Genetics, Cockerham. Black and White cast steers sold to 194.5 p/kg from PG Thornton, Scorton with plenty others selling in excess of 180 p/kg. The cast cow trade peaked at £1615 for Charolais cows from RJ Bargh & Co, Caton. Best meated dairy cows today sold between 160 and 165p/kg, they sold to a top of £1259 a head from RG & B Lewis, Kirkby Lonsdale. Other noted prices were £1229 from R Packham & Son, Docker, £1211 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel, £1174 from Richmond Hall Farm, Cockerham, followed by £1173 and £1171 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe. Many more dairy cows sold in excess of the £1100 mark. Cast bulls sold to a top of £1812 for an Aberdeen Angus from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale.

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of store cattle saw 319 forward. Best short keep cattle sold to a strong trade with quality and longer keep cattle meeting a slightly varied trade. A pair of Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1480 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. This was followed by the consignment from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse selling Herefords to £1460 and British Blues to £1410 and £1390. Hereford bullocks from CF Hogarth & Son, Burnside sold to £1400. Limousin bullocks from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton also achieved the £1400 mark. There is always some great runs of strong bullocks in Lancaster, this week saw a pen of three Angus bullocks sell to £1380 from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling, followed by a pen of four to £1370 from JD & JM Bracken, Catterall. A pen of three Limousin bullocks sold to £1370 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. Other continental bullocks sold to £1360 for British Blue and Limousins from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham. The heifer trade this week topped at £1400 for a Limousin from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Angus heifers topped at £1320 for a pen of three from L Parson & Sons, Lower Levens. Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1180 from WG Farms, Cockerham with others selling to £1120 from GA & A Atkinsons, Cantsfield. Other dairy bullocks saw dairy Shornhorns to £1100 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham, with Montbeliardes achieving the same price from S Shannon, Charnock Richards.
