STORE CATTLE

The high pace of Lancaster store cattle sale continues with the trade as buoyant as ever this week. Steers averaged £1136 which included more black and white steers and younger grazing types, heifers averaged £1091.
Leading the way this week were three cracking Angus bullocks from R & DM Rossall & Sons, Pilling selling to £1550. A consignment from L Parsons, Low Levens saw Angus bullocks sell to £1500 and a British Blue heifer to the same price from the same home. A pen of five Angus bullocks from I &ME Askew, New Hutton sold to £1400. Continental bullocks sold to a top of £1460 for British Blue from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. Limousin bullocks peaked at £1400 from D E & S M Moorhouse, Natland closely followed by a pen of 8 Limousin bullocks from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man selling to £1390. Simmental bullocks peaked at £1390 from E J Burrow, Milnthorpe, plenty of beef bred steers easily selling to the £1300 mark. The other leading prices for heifers saw a pair of Angus’ sell to £1300 from KH & D Holden & Son, Pilling a pen of British Blues selling to £1300 from W T Eastham & son, Goosnargh. Grazing cattle continue to be a strong trade eagerly bid for.
Dairy steers topped at £1320 for Montbeliardes from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton followed by Black & White bullocks selling to a top of £1290 from L Parsons, Low Levens.

CAST COWS AND OTM CATTLE

Lancaster boasted an entry of 134 Cast Cows and OTM cattle this week, the trade as electrifying as ever with an overall average of 149p/kg. Montbeliarde cast steers sold to 199.5p/kg or £1334 from A Kirby and Co, Pilling closely followed by OTM Black & White heifers selling to 197.5p/kg or £1481 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham. OTM beef heifers sold to 189.5p/kg or £1389 for an Angus from I Atkinson & Son, Warton.
Cast beef cows sold to a top 194.5p/kg for a Limousin from E J Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. Beef cows sold to a top of £1386 for a Hereford from S Barton, Radcliffe. Young Fleckvieh cows sold to 184.5p/kg or £1254 from B & AC Barnes, Middleton who also sold an impressive Fleckvieh cow weighing 925kg to 164.5p/kg grossing at £1521. Black and White cows sold to a top £1363 from L Burrow and Son, Lower Tatham with others to £1348 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and £1316 from S Barton, plenty of well fleshed dairy cows well in excess of £1200. More cast cows required each week as Lancaster hosts a ring full of eager buyers.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

Lancaster hit the jackpot again with a calf peaking at £600 for the second week in a row, this much admired 12-week-old Charolais bull calf from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. A British Blue and Charolais heifer from the same good home both achieved £570.
An Angus bull calf from Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton sold to £475, with other Angus bull calves to £415 from Lawson Farm, Cockerham and Wannop Farms, Overton. British Blue bull calves sold to £440 and £430 from A J & AJ Gibbons, St Micheals on Wyre. Plenty of strong beef calves in eager demand selling in the late £300. Black & White calves peaked at £240 from J R Newsham & Son, Condor Green.
A consignment of weanling calves from J R Newsham, Sellerley Farm met plenty of demand with Hereford bulls selling to £580 and Simmentals to £540, Hereford heifers from the same home to £440.
