Prime Hoggs

Lancaster enjoyed a very strong trade for prime hoggs, with an overall market average of 299p/kg and a SQQ of 307p/kg. Hannah McDonagh, Heaton with Oxcliffe took the top spot selling 54kg Texels to £162. This was followed by the consignment from J&H Davis, Cabus selling 47kg Cheviots to £147 and 46kg Cheviots to £143. Texels from KA Purtill, Wigan sold to £143 weighing 43kg. Bowker Faming, Balderstone sold 44kg Texels to £143. First time vendors A Makinson, Cabus sold 43kg Texels to £140. The upland hogg trade twice peaked at £138 for Mules and Mashams from FK&F Woodhouse, Scorton. Also achieving £138 with Masham hoggs from DC Miller from Claughton-On-Brock with others of the same breed to £136 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Horned hoggs sold to £127 weighing 43kg also from DC Miller. KA Purtill also sold hoggs to the top pence per kilo of the day achieving 354p/kg with shapey Texels.

Spring Lambs

Lancaster’s weekly sale of spring lambs had an entry of 26 forward, which sold to an overall market of average of 373p/kg. The consignment from AV Bailey, Cheshire took top spot selling 42kg Charollais’ to £164. The consignment of Dorset cross lambs from FE&CM Robinson & Son, Crooklands twice sold to £155 and £154, and topping the market at 419 p/kg and 408 p/kg. Continental lambs from WN & WD Smith & Sons, Cockerham sold to £152.

Cast Sheep

The cast sheep trade continues to go from strength to strength, topping at £172 this week for a Leicester tup from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. Beltex ewes sold to £147 from WJ Standen & Son, Daisy Bank. Texel tups peaked at £138 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Continental ewes continued to be in big demand with Texel cross ewes selling to £130 from K&LA Woodhouse, Scorton and Charollais ewes to £129 from S Wilson & Sons, Scotforth. Big mule ewes in strong demand selling to £123 and £117 from S Wilson & Son; £118 from DM Eames, Abbeystead; £117 from K&LA Woodhouse and £116 from D&K Swarbrick. Horned ewes sold to £90 and £86 from S Bosworth, Burnley.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The largest entry so far this season was met with the largest crowd and most demand, ensuring the strongest trade seen for a few weeks. The consignment from J France, Pilling saw mixed age Texel ewes with Texel twin lambs sell to £265 and £238. Texel ewes with single lambs topped at £235 from WJ Standen and Son, Daisy Bank. Aged Mule ewes with Texel twin lambs sold to £225 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Mixed age Mule ewes with Texel twin lambs sold to £220 and £210 from Myerscough College.
Next week includes the show for pens of five ewes and shearlings with twin lambs. Entries are beginning to flow in.
