Store Cattle

There was no rest for the wicked today at Lancaster as the store continues to sell well. Leading the way this week was the consignment of Limousins bullocks from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse selling to £1290, £1240 and £1220. Angus bullocks peaked at £1260 from I & ME Askew, New Hutton with a pen of five Angus’ from KH & D Holden & Son, Pilling selling to £1200. This was closely followed by a pen of four Angus heifers selling to £1190 from J Hesketh, Hutton. There were plenty more pens of bullocks regularly selling in the mid to late eleven hundreds. Dairy bullocks saw Fleckviehs sell to £1080 from J Prest & Son. This was closely followed by black and white bullocks selling to £1070 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. There was plenty of demand for grazing type cattle as well.

Cast Cows

The Bank Holiday sale of Cast Cows saw a good entry of 94 forward with all selling to a competitive trade for all classes and types with buyer’s ringside keen to fill orders. Well-fleshed beef cows continue to sell to a premium with a top price off 171.5p/kg achieved for a Limousin from JM & JJ Dawson, Littledale with others achieving 164.5p/kg for a Limousin from T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale. Many more beef cows sold at 145p/kg to 155p/kg with feeding type cows generally 130p/kg to 140p/kg depending on type and quality. Top-grossing beef cow was £1238 for a Limousin from JM & JJ Dawson with KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead selling a Limousin to £1137.

Dairy cows sold to a top price of 149.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from B & AC Barnes, Middleton who sold others to 144.5p/kg, Holstein Friesians sold to 134.5p/kg from H & SD Cornthwaite & Son, Nateby. Well-fleshed and heavy dairy cows were generally 188p/kg to 125p/kg with parlour type cows 105p/kg to 115p/kg. Top-grossing dairy cow was a Fleckvieh from B & AC Barnes selling to £1107.

All cows today averaged 123p/kg and £765 with 82% of entry being dairy cows.

OTM Heifers sold to 169.5p/kg for Montbeliardes from W Salisbury, Kirkham who sold others to 167.5p/kg. Beef heifers sold to 144.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from G & D Ball, Little Eccleston. Top price heifer today was £992 for a Holstein Friesian from JT & U Garth, Ellel. All heifers averaged 132p/kg and £730.

Cast steers sold to 164.5p/kg for a British Blue from S & CH Brennand, Ingleton and £993 for a Holstein Friesian from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse. All steers averaged 146p/kg and £976. Several cull stock bulls forward sold to 151.5p/kg for a Hereford from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with another Hereford from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall achieving £1213.

Calves & Stirks

The heat was on outside and in the calf ring today at Lancaster!

There was plenty of top-quality calves on offer saw a 58-day old British Blue bull calf sell to £430 from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne, who sold younger Blue heifer calves to £370. British Blue heifers from J & G Thornley, Roseacre sold to £405 and £395. Angus bull calves from David and Eileen Wallbank, Over Wyresdale sold to £380 and £360. Other Angus bull calves sold to £350 from J & VE Jolly, Great Eccleston. British Blue calves from J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne sold to £355 twice and £340 with heifer calves from the same home to £355.

Black and white bull calves topped at £150 from H & SD Cornthwaite & Sons, Nateby. More calves are required each week to fulfil buyers requirements.
