Store Cattle

Lancaster Auctions renowned weekly sale of store cattle had a similar number forward selling to an improved trade this week. The overall market average was an extremely impressive £1,115.27 for all cattle. There was a dozen bullocks that sold over £1,300, topping at £1,360 from JW Atkinson, Bentham for British Blues. Closely selling behind this was Angus bullocks from J Hesketh, Hutton achieving £1,340 for a pen of three, who sold a pen of four Limousins to £1,300. Simmental bullocks sold to £1,320 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with Charolais and Angus bullocks to £1310 from M Allen, Carnforth. A further 41 steers sold over the £1,200 mark.

Leading the way with heifers today was GF & EE Holt, Chipping selling a pair of Angus heifers to £1,280 with other Angus heifers to £1,210 from R Oldfield, Yealand Redmayne. Continental heifers peaked at £1,220 from JW Atkinson, Bentham. There was plenty more pens of well fleshed heifers selling mid to late eleven hundreds.

Dairy bullocks saw black and whites top at £1,240 from CR & SC Adams, Thornton with Montbeliardes to £1,190 from J & JM Walmsley, Pilling.

Cast Cows

There was a bumper entry of OTM Cattle forward that saw 141 go under the gavel. There was a plainer offering of cows in the market, selling to a continued strong average of 132p/kg.

Leading the way this week was OTM Limousin heifers from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet selling to 209.5p/kg or £1,215. Also selling in excess of the 200p/kg mark was a Limousin heifer from RH & RA Fawcett, Burton selling to 204.5p/kg or £1,124. The steer trade sold to 199.5p/kg and 194.5p/kg from DH & M Kellet & Sons, Cockerham topping at £1,216. Plenty more OTM beef cows, heifers and bullocks sold between 180p/kg and 195p/kg. Beef cows sold to a top of 177.5p/kg for Limousin from MA & JA Winn, Burneside with other Limousin cows to 169.5p/kg from A Clark and Johnson, Windermere, this also topped the beef cow section at £1,139. Closely followed with other Limousin cows to £1,116 from MA & JA Winn with many beef cows over the £1,000 mark.

Best young dairy cows sold in excess of 150p/kg with a large quantity of good meated dairy cows selling in the region of 140p/kg. Dairy cows saw Swedish Reds sell to £1,216 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme with black and white cows from the same home selling to £1063. There was plenty of good dairy cows grossing £1,000 and more today.

Calves & Stirks

The weekly sale of Calves and Weanlings at Lancaster had an entry of 79 forward meeting strong demand for all types from a good ringside of buyers. The trade remains very buoyant especially for the time of year. Leading the way this week was a Simmental bull calf from WG Farms of Cockerham selling at £440. This was closely followed by British Blue bull calves from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping selling to £430. Other Continental bulls saw Charolais sell to £380 from WG Farms and British Blue bulls to £375 from J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne. Native bull calves always meet plenty of demand with Herefords selling to £365 three times and to £355 from TE & M Kidd, Ellel. Angus bull calves sold to £365 from H & VE Jolly, Great Eccleston. Plenty of beef bull calves sold in excess of the £300 mark.

The heifer calf trade this week saw the consignment of British Blues from J & G Thornley, Kirkham sell to £425 and £415. Other Continental heifers saw Charolais heifers sell to £360 from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale. Plenty more Continental heifers sold over the £300 mark. Native heifer calves sold to £335 from J & G Thornley for an Angus, with Hereford heifers to £295 from TE & M Kidd, Ellel. Plenty of strong native heifers selling into the late two hundreds.

The black and white calf trade remains very good with today being no different. Topping the trade this week was B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal selling to £160. Plenty of rearing calves sold around the £100 mark.

A selection of three-four-month-old weanling calves in today saw Muse Rhine Issel bulls sell to £420 from Stoney Lane Farm, Nateby with Limousin heifers selling to £400.
