Lancaster Livestock Auction: Easter Spring Lamb Show - Monday 15th April

Spring Lambs

Lancaster Auction held its annual show and sale of spring lambs today with our thanks going to our pre-sale judge Mr N Lomax for giving up his time and expertise. A special thank you also goes to our sponsors Natural Stockcare and Ribble Fuel Oils. The Championship Rosette was awarded to the first prize Continental sired lamb from W Bradley, Goosnargh, this 40kg Beltex lamb sold to 325p/kg or £130 to our judge. The Reserve Champion was awarded to E Needham, Kendal with a Suffolk Lamb which was first prize in the Native class sold to 293p/kg or £126 also purchased by the judge. There was a two tier trade which saw the best quality lambs in very strong demand and easily sold with other types in less demand. The consignment from PW & DW Roskell saw Beltexs sell to £118 or 295p/kg with Charollais from the same home achieving £118. S Wilson & Son, sold Charollais to £118 with Suffolks to £117 from E Needham and Beltex crosses to £116 from B & AC Barnes, Kirkby Lonsdale plenty of other pens selling around the £110. There was an overall market average of 240p/kg.

All lambs forward today sold to an average of £99.86.

Prime Hoggs

There was an entry of 467 Prime Hoggs which sold to another good trade at Lancaster with an overall market average of 187p/kg with an SQQ of 198p/kg. Leading the way today at £101 was T & L Kirkham, Eccleston with Texel hoggs with two further pens to £100 and £98. Other Texel hoggs achieved £99 from JA & MM Taylor, Brookhouse. Beltex hoggs sold to £100 from KA Purtill, Wigan and J Smith, Lancaster. A consignment from AG Butler, Hambleton saw Texels to £99 and £97, Suffolks selling to £98 with Charollais from the same good home achieving £97. Plenty of pens of Continental Hoggs sold easily into the nineties. Hill bred hoggs sold to a top of £91 for Gritstones from J Fryars, Kirkham with Cheviots to £90 from J & H Davis, Cabus and Mules also achieving £90 from AG Butler and horned hoggs topped at £87. Top price per kilo this week was 250p/kg from KA Purtill with others to 223p/kg from the same home. Ian Richardson sold Beltex hoggs to 231p/kg with J Smith achieving 223p/kg.

Cast Sheep

The weekly sale of Cast Sheep had an increased entry of 125 forward which saw all classes a sharper trade. The trade topped twice at £112 firstly for a Texel tup from H Birkett & Son, Overton and secondly for Suffolk ewes from TA Blair, Poulton Le Fylde. This was closely followed by a Beltex tup from J Smith, Lancaster and a Texel tup from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth selling to £100. Texel ewes sold to £99 from H Birkett & Son, £98 from B & AC Barnes, Middleton and £97 from A Fare, Newton. Leicester ewes sold to £96 from G & K Richmond, Preston with Charollais to the same price from A Fare. S Wilson & Son from Scotforth sold Suffolks to £92 and £89 with G & K Richmond selling Suffolks to £87. Mule ewes sold to £84 from JT & B Fox, Quernmore with D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe selling Mules to £80. Dalesbred sheep sold to £65 from DM Easmes, Abbeystead who also sold a Teeswater to £85 and Swaledales to £52. A handful of Herdwick ewes in today topped at £63.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

Once again, there was over a hundred lives for the weekly sale of sheep with lambs at foot. Leading the way this week was aged Mule Ewes with Twin Lambs selling to £175 from Myerscough College with others from the same home selling to £168. Aged Mule ewes with twins regularly sold between £160 and £165. Mule ewes with single lambs sold to a top of £115 from T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale.

Easter Bank Holiday Monday, sale as normal with entries coming forward well for the sale and more entries invited.
