Store Cattle
There was a catalogued entry 455 Store Cattle for the weekly sale at Lancaster. The short keep, well-fleshed cattle continue to sell well and be in strong demand with leaner, longer keep type of cattle and cattle showing signs of a wet autumn sold to a slightly easier trade as seen nationwide.
The sale topped at £1330 for a British Blue Bullock from J & O Galbraith of Endmoor.
Native Cattle continue to sell well with Aberdeen Angus Bullocks selling to £1290 from RJ Cardwell Ltd of Preston and Hereford Bullocks sold to £1200. Hereford Heifers sold to £1200 for a Hereford from JA Salthouse & Son of Preston with a pen of four Aberdeen Angus Heifers selling to £1130.
Big fit black and whites continue to sell to a good trade in comparison to other cattle.
OTM Cattle
There was a bumper entry 157 cast cows forward, the trade, for the time of year, was to be expected, but all were eagerly bid for.
There was a good trade throughout the sale for all specification of cows, especially for the number that is on offer, with more cows expected to come out with many farmers worried about forage.
The Cast Cows were topped at 164.5p/kg from G & P Middleton of Garsdale for a Limousin which also made the top price per head selling to £1069.25.
Cast Heifers sold to 149.5p/kg for a Limousin from H & A Stephenson of Tunstall.
Vendors are advised to continue forwarding cast cows at Lancaster and take advantage of this trade at the moment.
Calves and Stirks
The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks saw another strong entry just short of 70 forward, once again, selling to strong demand. The trade for calves remains strong, especially with the current store cattle trade slightly easier.
Topping the Angus Bull calf trade was J & M Sanderson of Pasture Barn selling to £365 and £350. British Blue bull calves this week topped at £375 also from J & M Sanderson with JM & MH France and Son of Newhouse Farm selling to £345.
Heifers this week topped at £290 from J & M Sanderson with British Blues and £275 for two week old blue heifers from JR Pye of Hatters Farm.
A selection of Weaners and Stirks in the market today saw them sell to a top of £620 for yearling British Blue heifers from ML & SM Dobson of Espford with five month old British blue bullocks from the same home selling to £495. Weanling calves from JR Newsham of Sellerley Farm sold to £420 for British Blue bulls, £395 for British Blue Heifers and Hereford Heifers to £390.
