Prime Lambs

There was a smaller entry of prime lambs forward this week with the drastic drop in the price at start of this week and with the better weather, people are taking the opportunity to get some grass.

Lambs were a slightly sharper trade then the previous day’s trade selling to a market average of 154p/kg. Export type and Beltex lambs were good to sell topping at 213p/kg from Ian Little of Barrows Green with plenty of pens of that type selling either side of 190p/kg. Heavy weight Suffolks sold to a top of £99 from JM Sedgwick of Sedbergh with heavy weight and best bred lambs selling into the eighties. Heavy weight Mule lambs sold to a top of £75.50 from ST & SE Allen of Tebay.

Cast Sheep

There was just short of 500 cast ewes forward this week selling to a similar trade as the previous week. There was a large quantity of leaner ewes forward this week, which is to be expected with the weather and type of ewes. Well-fleshed ewes were eagerly bid for and good to sell with Continental ewes selling to a top of £96 for Texels from JT Proctor of Mireside, plenty of fit ewes were selling around the ninety-pound mark. Best fit Mule ewes sold into the mid-seventies topping at £77 from JT & A Armistead of Selside with WJ & L Barker of Arkholme selling them to £76. Fit horned ewes were good to sell and in demand with best Rough Fells topping at £59 from JW Little of Soulby, and Swaledales to £47 from FRT Cavendish of Borrowdale with fit Swaledale ewes selling in the forties. Lean types of ewes sold in to the twenties.
