PRIME HOGGS
When the weathers grim, the trade shines.
Horrible weather put a dampener on numbers today, but did nothing to cool demand. A hill-bred show of Herdwicks and Swales saw trade lift on the week to an overall of 316p/kg, with fewer sheep about sharpening competition. Plenty of heavies still needing careful selling but those who faced the wind and rain were rewarded in the ring.
Trade topped today at 408.9p/kg or £184 for a cracker of a Beltex from Messrs CM Jennings. 40kg Texels sold to 377.5p/kg for a smashing pen of 5 from MW & MR Black. Lighter Dutch Spotties hit 369.2p/kg from Messrs DA Dixon. 35kg Texels sold to 354.3p/kg from Messrs D & J Woof. 30kg lambs to 330p/kg from Messrs RA Clegg & Miss LD Bennett. Best of the heavies also better to sell with super Will presenting Messrs PJ & ES Rogerson’s run of hoggs to 356p/kg at 50kg. The same good farming sold 49kgs to 355p/kg. A variation of 27kg to 60kg all well bid for today with many more numbers required to meet weekly demand.
