J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly Sale of Pigs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 28th January 2025.

PIGS

“A selective trade witnessed at today’s sale with only the best bred and best fed pigs achieving premium prices, with native bred types harder to place.”
Prime pigs sold to £268 for a trio of hogs from JM Navesey, Darwen. These topped the scales at 115kg. Another J36 regular PK&R Woof, Kendal was next at £265 for his trio of gilts weighing 130kg. Next at £255 and top p/kg today was three gilts from J&JR Stott, Kinsland which weighed 105kg and achieved 243p/kg. Boars sold to £115 for 88kgs from WE Gregson, Wrea Green.
Stores and weaners again a two-tier trade, better shaped types could have been sold twice over with these selling to £92 from J&GE Heseltine, Skipton with similar goods selling to £90 for a pen of boars from MP Tattersall, Langholm. Weaners sold to £88 for seven from J.EG Heseltine, Skipton with the best natives to £46 from P Martin, Barnard Castle.

PRIME HOGGS

A resurgence in trade was witnessed today, with demand as strong as ever and a much better story than those reported last week. Texel hoggs sold to 380.6p/kg from MH&AR Robinson, Kendal this was for a pen of six. F Jackson & Sons, Clifton sold a pen of four Texels to 368p/kg. Handy weights were a stronger trade throughout, with 43kg hoggs from RF Morphet, Arkholme selling to 355.8p/kg. Heavy hoggs also a better trade than expected with 49kg hoggs from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh hitting 359.5p/kg. Even the lightest end of hoggs sold well today, as a pair of 30kg Dutch Spotted hoggs hit £100. Top pence per head on the day was from MJ Shepherd, Newbiggin with a pair hitting £183. The same price was achieved for a single Texel from KA Purtill, Wigan.
An overall market average of 328p/kg was achieved and a per head average of £148.

CAST SHEEP

An entry of predominately leaner and lighter weight ewes forward today, as vendors off load after scanning. Strongest ewes sold to £222 for a Charollais from BR Harrison, Staveley with Suffolks to £216 from RA&L Hodgson, Patton, £210 S Thompson, Grange Over Sands, Lleyns £208 from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens and £206 Texels from PA&D Slater, Barnacre. Others stronger end ewes were £175 to £190 and mediums £150 to £175. Mules sold to £175 from G&KM Atkinson, Colby with other heavier end ewes £150 to £170, mediums £130 to £145 and the leaner framed ewes £110 to £125.
Hill ewes sold to £146 for Cheviots and £126 Rough Fells both from S Crawford, Staveley. Scotch Black Face sold to £98, Swaledale £96, Dalesbred £82 and Herdwicks £78.
An abundance of rams today sold to £170, with other mediums generally £140 to £160 and leaner lads £110 to £130. Hill rams sold to £160 for Rough Fells, £146 for Herdwick and £100 Swaledales.
