J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 30th January 2024

PRIME HOGGS

Just over 1000 hoggs sold to a pleasing average of 286p/kg, with well over half the sale being hill bred hoggs. Heavy hoggs were keenly bid for by our ring side of ten active buyers, with top price being a Charollais selling to £172 from AW Crowe, Witherslack. Pens of Texels sold to £170 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale who sold other pens to £169. Charollais sold to £164 from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite and pens of Suffolks sold to the same price from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Best bred hoggs saw Beltexs to 341p/kg from RF Morphet, Halton with many selling at 325p/kg to 335p/kg. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviots to £168 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston, who sold other pens to £152 from the same home. All Mule hoggs sold to a sharp trade with a top price of £143 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale who sold Mashams to £141 and pens of 45kg Mules hoggs to £129. Horned lambs saw Scotch Black Faces to £126 from AW&D Brown, Pennington with a pen of thirty Scotch at 41kg selling to £115.50 from B&JI Williams & Son, Ravenstonedale. Swaledales sold to £122 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with Herdwicks selling to £109 at 39kg from JW Hodgson, Little Langdale.

CAST SHEEP

Pure bred ewes sold to £208 for Texels from G Rawsthorn, Cartmel with the strongest ¾ breds selling to £160 from PJ&SE Rogerson, Appleby and IL Dixon, Carnforth. Others sold to £154 from WJ&AJ Matthews, Patton and £145 from G Wilson, Nether Kellet. First cross Texels sold to £138 from JC Dunning, Orton with others stronger sorts regularly £110 to £125 and mediums £95 to £108. Mashams sold to £106 from C Head, Kendal with the strongest medium Mules to £100 from D Jackson, Windermere and S&SA Edmondson, Ulverston. Cheviot Mules sold to £99 from TH&D Cornthwaite & Son, Grange Over Sands. Hill bred ewes sold to £84 for medium Cheviots from JJ France, Caton with others at £82 from JP&S Thorpe, Orton and Swaledales to £81 from AW&AM Clark, Windermere. Herdwicks sold to £80 from SC Gorst, Broughton in Furness with Rough Fells to £72 from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell. Mediums Horned ewes were generally £52 to £65, with smaller sorts £40 to £50 with only the leaners and smallest less.
Mediums cull rams selling to £140 for Continentals from PW&D Swindlehurst, Under Barrow with others generally £120 to £135. Hill rams to £114 for Cheviots from S Crawford, Staveley.
