J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly Sale of Pigs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 13th February 2024

PIGS

101 pigs forward and selling to another strong trade with prime pigs selling to £235 from J Stott Jnr, Kendal with others £225 from D Nicholson, Cockermouth and £215 from JM Navesey, Darwen. Best prime pigs sold 239p/kg from JM Navesey, Darwen with others regularly 180p/kg to 210p/kg. Culls sold to £1000 for sows from J McEwan, Dumfries.
An abundance of stores and weaners saw the best weaners sell to £51 from TJ Hoodless, Armathwaite with the best younger weaners £25 to £30.

PRIME HOGGS

A very strong trade was seen for all types and breeds of hoggs at Junction 36, an overall market averaged of 308p/kg was achieved, with well over half the sale being hill bred hogg.

- BFL’s sold to £147 from R Lawrance, Grange Over Sands.
- Rough Fells sold to £143 Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh.
- Dalesbreds sold to £143 WI&A Atkinson & Son, Garstang.
- Mules sold to £141 form SM Watson, Ulverston.
- Swaledales sold to £135.50 WI&A Atkinson & Son, Garstang.
- Herdwicks sold to £126 Messrs Hodgson, Rydal.

CAST SHEEP

Strong competition ring side saw all ewes see a lift in trade, with all classes and types in demand. Heavy pure bred ewes sold to £216 for a Texel from A Brown, Carnforth with other heavier stronger ewes regularly £140 to £165. Cheviot Mules sold to £128 from NP&CE Buckley, Ings and North County Mule to £124 from J France, Pilling. Hill bred ewes sold to £118 for Cheviots from BR Harrison, Staveley and JE Atkinson, Ulverston. Herdwicks sold to £117, Swaledales to £97 and Rough Fells to £87. Medium ewes of all breeds were generally selling at a £10 to £15 lift. Smaller hill ewes were regularly selling at £40 to £60.
Cull rams sold to £192 for a BFL from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale. Medium Continental rams sold to £176 from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby with lighter weight mediums £140 to £160. Hill rams sold to £100 for Cheviots from DH Ashworth, Holme.
500 ewes are required ever week to satisfy buyer demand.
