PRIIME PIGS
Today we held our Christmas show of prime pigs, thanks must go to today’s sponsors Northern Fallen Stock, Yan Farm Care and First Base Plant and Machinery sales. Thanks must also go to our judge Joe and Richard Nettleton, Penrith who gave up their time this morning.
The prizes were awarded as follows:

A top price of £225 was achieved for todays reserve champion pair from J Stott, Kingsland who sold others to £215. The days champion from C Woodhouse, Nateby sold to £190.
PRIME LAMBS
Butchers Bonanza sale sees Christmas come early for vendors. Despite a slightly lower pence per kilo average in the week, many lambs made the same or more as the previous sale with buyers proving just slightly more picky and a longer number of lighter lambs forward.
The champion pen of sheep today topped at 500p/kg for three exceptional Beltexs from J Smith, Brookhouse. These were bought by the days judge George Hamlet of Hamlets Butchers, Garstang who did a fantastic job of judging our thirty one trios forward for the pre sale show.

The champion lambs sold to £230 from J Smith, Brookhouse, Texel lambs sold to £200 from LE&A Ridding, Selside for another pen of three. A single Texel from AG Butler, Hambleton sold to £179. M Bereford, Kirkby in Furness sold Beltex lambs to £176.

An overall average of 302p/kg was achieved, accounting for the day’s massive variety. More sheep are needed next week as demand remains very strong.
CAST SHEEP
Cull ewes maintain and exceed expectations at NWA Junction 36.
Several better bred ewes forward today but not the power of previous weeks, selling to £176 for Texels with other mediums £155 to £170, smaller sorts with meat £125 to £145 and the leaner end £105 to £115.
Mules sold to £140 with other heavier end £130 plus, meated mediums £118 to £125 and smaller sorts £95 to £110. Pure hill ewes sold to £150 for Cheviots, £125 Rough Fells, £122 Swaledale and £112 for Dalesbreds.
The Christmas prize awards for the highest priced pen of five of more ewes was awarded as followed:
Mules – Calderside Farm, six at £140.
Continental – WL&F Richards, ten at £137.
Hill Bred – JR Whitton, thirteen at £124.
