J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep. Tuesday 7th November 2023

PRIME LAMBS

1450 lambs were forward with trade jumping a gear or two, and a market average 266p/kg achieved, with a third of the sale being hill bred. Heavy lambs were once again selling to a premium at Junction 36 with Texels selling to £161 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston and Dutch Spotted to £151 from WJ&L Barker, Arkholme. Beltexs sold to £147 from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside. The best heavy lambs were regularly selling at £145 to £150. A ring full of Suffolks sold to £145 from TA&J Dixon, Selside. The best sold to 305p/kg twice from J Clarke & Sons, Borrick and J Twigge, Lindale. Mules saw a top of £130 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Well feed Mules were regularly 255p/kg to 265p/kg. Cheviots sold to £126 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh and Swaldealses sold to £118 from TA&J Dixon, Selside. More lambs are needed on a weekly basis, to fulfil our buyers requirements.

CULL SHEEP

721 cull farmers ewes were forward at the popular weekly sale, with all classes and types experiencing a rise in trade. Heavy pure and three quarter bred ewes attracted keen buyer interest, with a pen of Texels from E Dodgson, Kendal selling at £178, Other pens from this same good home achieved £160. Others sold to £150 from T Park, Lyth with these sorts regularly £120 to £135. First cross ewes sold to £120 for Suffolk cross from S&B Capstick, Old Hutton with Texel cross also achieving £120 from AW Crowe, Witherslack and J Holme & Son, Ulverston. Others were regularly £98 to £115. Cheviot Mules sold to £108 from M Robinson, Stainton with North Country Mules to £102 from TMW&H Hodgson, Nibthwaite and Masham also achieving £102. Pens of heavy well fleshed Mule ewes were £85 to £95, with a large number of medium and lighter weigh Mules £72 to £85. Pure hill bred ewes sold to £74 for Scotch Black Face from RI Dixon, Low Newton with Herdwicks selling to £67 from Messrs Kirkby & Longworth, Kentmere, Whiteface woodlands to £66 from S&A Gardner, Carnfort. Swaledales sold to £64 from JD Dixon, Longsleddale with others also achieving £64 from WI&A Atkinson, Bleasdale. A large number of leaner horned ewes saw the stronger end £40 to £50, with mediums £28 to £55 and the smallest and leanest at realisation.
Cull rams sold to £175 for a Dutch Spotted from DA Dixon, Grayrigg. A large number of lean hard worked continental rams forward generally sold at £105 to £125, with hill rams selling to £92 for a horned ram from the IOM.
