J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM and Store Cattle, Thursday 30th March 2023.

Calves & Stirks

Native bred calves continue to be a strong trade at Junction 36, Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to £370 from Colby Farms, Appleby who sold others to £330. British Blue bulls topped at £335 from TK Robinson & Sons, Old Hutton. Six week old British Blue bulls sold twice to £300 from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg and HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. Continental bred bulls were regularly at £250-£280 for 4-6 weeks old’s. Limousin heifer sold to a top of £265 from Colby Farms with 4 week old British Blue heifer at £240 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. Dairy bred bulls saw Friesians sell to £100 from Messrs Wilson, Alithwaite with the best rearing types £70 plus.
80 stirks were forward for a full ring side of buyers, all keen to purchase replacement stock. A run of suckler bred six month old Simmental bullocks from A&M Carter, Witherslack peaked at £870 with Blonde bullocks selling to £850 from B Wilson & Sons, Selside. Dairy bred British Blue bullock from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell sold to £800. Heifers peaked at £780 from B Wilson & Sons, Selside with dairy bred Limousins selling to £700 from M&S Blease, Carnforth. Friesian bullocks sold to £615 from AE&PC Capstick, Heversham. A run of four month old Limousin bullocks from Colby Farms, Appleby peaked at £540 for a pen of four.

Store Cattle

A pleasing entry of 250 store cattle were forward. A run of strong cattle from RJ&R Holden, Silecroft saw Charollais top at £1790 with Whitebred Shorthorns from the same home selling to £1740. Dairy bred British Blue bullocks sold to £1650 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton with heifers peaking at £1620 for Limousins from T&SB Proctor, Kirkby Stephen. Yearling heifers saw Blonde sell to £1390 from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands. Yearling grazing bullocks were regularly selling at the £1000-£1100 mark. Bulls saw a top of £1290 for Limousins from JM Harrison, Broughton in Furness.

OTM / Cast Cattle

47 cows were forward, with another impressive overall average of 191p/kg. Top price of the day was £1685 for a Limousin from S Whitehead, Middleton. Friesian cows sold to £1514 from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal with others selling to £1505 from S&M Cooper, Leece. The best Friesian cows were frequently selling at 195-200p/kg. Beef bred cows sold to a top of 230p/kg from S Whitehead, Middleton. Meated beef bred cows were regularly selling at 200p/kg plus. J36 boasts a busy ring side of buys for all types of cast cows with more needed at the fortnight sales.
