Red hot trade today, with an overall market average of 201p/kg for all sold.
Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold 257.5p/kg for a Blonde from T Atkinson, Ulverston with Limousin x to 244.5p/kg from CI Briggs, Ambleside and Charolais x to 241p/kg again from T Atkinson, Ulverston. Other medium beef cows regularly 195-215p/kg with keen interest for those suitable for further finishing
Dairy bred cows sold to 199.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from MH & AR Robinson, Old Hutton who sold other at 197.5p/kg with imported Fleckvieh selling to 191.5p/kg from SJ&J Hodgson, Colton. Dairy cows direct from parlour regularly 165-180p/kg. Top grossing cow today was a Charollais from T Atkinson, Ulverston achieving £2130 who sold others a £1951 and £1884. Dairy cows sold to £1597 for a flack from SJ&J Hodgson, Colton with Holstein Friesian selling to £1468 from Messrs Dennison. OTM steers sold to 249.5p/kg and £1414 for Limousin x from T & SB Procter, Kirby Stephen with heifers selling to 261.5p/kg and £1009 from GG&MA long, Pennington.

CALVES AND STIRKS

A smaller entry of 54 forward, with many more could have been sold to vendors advantages. The sale topped at £360 twice for British Blue Bulls from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. British Blues Bulls were regularly selling around the £300+ mark. Aberdeen Angus Bulls sold to a top of £285 (4 weeks old) from FB Dunning & Son, Orton. 3 Week Old Galloway bulls from JR Handley, Whinfell sold to £175. Heifer calves saw a top of £275 for British Blues from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth with other British Blue heifers selling to £260 from JR Handley, Whinfell. Angus heifers were keenly bid for selling to a top of £275 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. Dairy bred bulls sold to a top of £140 for 4 week old Fleckvieh from RG&JA Clark, Endmoor.
An impressive entry of 80 stirks were forward, with all selling to full value to a packed ringside of buyers at J36. The stirk trade topped at £1040 for sucker bred Blonde bullocks from B Wilson & Sons, Selside who also sold Limousin heifers to £950. A pen of 6 dairy bred Aberdeen Angus heifers at 5-6 month old from M&S Blease, Carnforth sold to £665. Colby Farms, Appleby sold a lovely run of weaned stirks which saw Limousin bullocks sell to £655 at 5 month old with British Blue bullocks selling to the same price. A keen interest was shown for all bulls in the stirk section with Limousin selling to £720 from E Lawson, Howgill with other Limousin bulls selling to £710 from M Knowles, Preston.

STORE CATTLE

150 Store Cattle forward with trade continuing to be as strong as ever at J36. The sale topped at £1460 for a Limousin bullock from S&M Cooper, Leece with others selling to £1400 for a 10 Month Old from CI Briggs, High Wray. Native bullocks saw a top of £1395 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus from TW Nelson & Son, Cockrigg. The heifer trade topped at £1410 for Charolais from J Twigge, Lindale with Aberdeen Angus selling to £1360 from JT&A Armistead, Selside with Herefords selling to £1280 from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite.
Large quantities of Store Cattle needed for the forthcoming sales this spring with a packed ringside of buyers every fortnight after grazing and finishing cattle for the summer.
