The opening of pigs saw a bumper entry forward with new and returning vendors from throughout the Northern Counties and Scotland. Well finished pigs sold to a premium with buyers representing the catering retail and butcher trade presented keen to fulfil orders.
Prime gilts sold to £165 for a trio of large white x pietrain from JM Navesey, Darwen who sold another trio at £162. Pietrain x gilts from D Nicholson, Cockermouth sold to £155 with others at £145 from Whiteknowe Farm, Dumfries. MP Tattersall, Langholm sold Duroc x gilts at £138. Lighter weight gilts sold to £98 for large blacks from H Kent, Cockerham with Oxford Sandy and Blacks to £88 from GM&DJ Pye, Arkholme. Gilts sold to 162p/kg from JM Navesey, Darwen.
Prime hoggs sold to £175 for Large White x from J Stott, Crosscrake with others at £172 from JM Navesey, Darwen. All purchased by Browns Quality Meats as a treat for their customers at their Lindal Farm Shop.
Cull sows sold to £95 for a Large White from SP Pheonix, Preston with Tamworths selling to £85 from R Holmes, Inskip. Top sows this sale reached 62p/kg from SP Pheonix, Preston.
Several cull boars forward with a top prize of £70 for a Large White from SP Pheonix, Preston.
Stores and Weaners were forward in huge numbers with the largest entry to date. 82 weaners sold to £51 for a pen of Royal Landrace weaners from Dumfries House, Cumnock. Berkshire x weaners sold to £26 with saddleback x to £26. Others generally £10-£20 depending on quality and breed.
