CULL COWS
With farmers in the fields, there was a reduced number of cull cows forward today, therefore selling to an increased trade with buyers keen to secure cows to fulfil orders. An overall market averaged of 157p/kg was achieved, with a large proportion of the sale being dairy cows direct out of the parlour. Cows sold to 177.5p/kg for a Shorthorn x from J Turnbull, Meathop with other beef cows suitable for finishing generally 155p/kg-170p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a heavy weight from AT Thelkeld Ltd, Satterthwaite achieving £1340. Dairy cows sold to 171p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal with other well fleshed dairy cows 150p/kg-165p/kg and cows direct out of the parlour 140p/kg-150p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from S&M Cooper, Leece achieving £1239.
OTM dairy heifers sold to 191.5p/kg and £1233 for a Holstein Friesian from R&J Dodgson, Natland.
OTM steers sold to 219.5p/kg and £1439 for an Aberdeen Angus x from JM Haddow, Hincaster.
Cull bulls sold to 189.5p/kg and £1762 from I&AJ Armer, Burneside with Stabilisers selling to 174.5p/kg and £1717 from A Dixon & Son, Selside.
BEEF BREEDING
A ten year old British Blue x cow with five month old Limousin x heifer calf at foot from E&S Bower, Blawith achieved £1350.
STORE CATTLE
A seasonal entry of store cattle saw several returning buyers ringside, looking to secure additional and replacement stores, with all cattle selling to a competitive trade and more needed each sale to fulfil buyers requirements.
Steers sold to a top of £1555 for a Charolais x from RJ&D Holden, Broughton in Furness who sold Aberdeen Angus x at £1460. Other stronger steers were generally selling at £1300-£1350. Dairy bred steers sold to £1375 for a Fleckvieh and Montbeliarde from JE Wightman, Lupton who sold others at £1325. A keen interest in younger cattle with a consignment of ten month old Blonde x from J Whitworth, Bolton le Sands selling to £1380, with others at £1315.
Heifers saw top price of £1515 for an Aberdeen Angus x from JM Haddow, Hincaster who also sold Charolais x at £1490 and £1480. Other stronger heifers sold to £1435 for a Limousin x from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton with British Blue x selling to £1325 from C Wilson, Witherslack.
Yearling heifers sold to £1205 for Blonde x from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands who sold others at £1045. Buyers requesting more cattle at the next sale with entries closing on Wednesday 23rd August.
CALVES
91 calves forward today which included the prize show kindly sponsored by Semex and Norbreck Genetics and was judged by Mr G Ryder, Ingleton. He awarded the results as followed:

2nd RG & J Clark with a Friesian selling to £100
The championship rosette was awarded to a British Blue heifer from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with the reserve champion to JW&TE Sharp, Lyth again showing a British Blue. Thank you for all vendors for presenting stock in good time, to allowing the show and sale to run on time.
Bull calves today sold to a top price of £520 for a British Blue x from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor who sold others at £460. JW&TE Sharp, Lyth achieved £430, as did MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton. Younger bull calves sold to £365 for a Limousin x from RC Wharton & Son, Appleby with other at £315 from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton. Native sired bulls sold to £275 for an Aberdeen Angus x from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Dairy bulls sold to a top of £140 for nice rearing sorts from TW&CA Long, Ulverston with others generally £90-£110 and mediums £50-£70.
Heifer calves sold to a top of £460 for the champion calf being a British Blue x heifer, an entry of predominately younger heifer calves forward selling to £360 from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton with others generally £220-£280. Young native sired heifers sold to £285 for Shorthorn x from RG&J Clarke, Endmoor with three week old Hereford x from Messrs Wilson, Witherslack selling at £165.
43 weaned calves and stirks saw British Blue x steers from Bambers Farm Ltd, Cockerham sell to £700 with others at £690 and £670. Aberdeen Angus x steers from J Butterworth, Catforth sold at £695 with Limousin x achieving £675 from M Forbes, Ecclefechan. Recently weaned Limousin x steers from N Howard, Gainford achieved £600 with Hereford x at £560 from TW Handley, Sedbergh dairy bulls sold at £540 for a ring full from Messrs Halpin, Barrow in Furness. British Blue heifers from Bambers Farm Ltd, Cockerham saw a pen full sell at £670 with others at £635.
