J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, 30th November 2021

PRIME LAMBS
The prime lamb go from strength to strength with the market average of 284p/kg for 1386 forward. This week’s top call was £161 for 57kg Suffolk lambs from DM & D Cook, Ulverston. This was closely followed by other Suffolk lambs to £155 from RF & CE Hodgson, Ulverston and £154 from M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. Texel lambs peaked at £156 weighing 55kg from John Twigge, Lindale with plenty of pens of heavy lambs regularly selling in the one hundred and forties. Beltex lambs peaked at £142 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside. Beltex lambs easily sold in excess of the 300p/kg mark peaking at 345p/kg from TE & J Wadsworth and Son, Kendal with plenty of pens selling around the 330p/kg mark as all Beltex lambs forward averaged £136.
The Mule lamb trade this week peaked at £148 for 56kg lambs from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton closely followed by 50kg Mules selling to £139 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Horned lambs topped at £110.50 for Dalesbreds from R Capstick and Son, Ingleton.

CAST SHEEP
All sections of ewes would be eight to ten pounds dearer on the week with 500 going through the ring, with plenty of demand for bigger numbers. A wonderful run of pure bred Texel ewes from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston sold to an impressive top of £220, with other ewes from the same home selling to £216. Many of the best pure bred ewes were regularly selling over the £200 mark. Texel cross ewes sold to a top of £188 from AW Crowe, Witherslack. Many of the strongest Continental bred ewes sold at the £140-£150 mark. Mule ewes saw impressive returns with a top of £141 from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington, with others to £130 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Fit medium type Mule ewes sold to the £100-£105 mark. A run of Masham ewes from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale sold to a top of £113 for a pen of ten. Hill ewes also sold to impressive returns with Cheviots selling to £121 from TH&DM Cornthwaite & Son, Cartmel Fell, with others to £118 from J Woodburn & Partners. The best of the Swaledale ewes were back into the eighties, a top of £88 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth, with a full pen selling to £84 from M Todd, Longsleddale. Rough Fell ewes saw a top of £84 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale. Some impressive runs of Herdwick ewes were forward today, with a top of £75 from AJ&L Birkett, Little Langdale, with others selling to £70 from D Leighton, Grizebeck.
Cull rams saw keen bidding from all buyers, with Suffolks selling to £198 from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington, Texels to £188 from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor and Swaledale tups topping at £116 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale.
Just the one Billy goat on the market today which was met with keen interest and sold to £87 from D Cooper, Broughton in Furness.
