J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Whitsuntide Cattle Fair

CALVES AND STIRKS
A good entry of 150 calves and stirks were forward with all calves keenly bid for once again, with the best end being a faster trade than previous weeks. Limousin bulls from CM & CS Chapplehow, Clifton topped at £570 with British Blue bulls making the same price twice from JW & TE Sharpe, Lyth. Many of the best Blue bulls sold over the £500 mark. Bambers Farm sold a run of 4 week old Charolais bulls to £480 and £450.

British Blue heifers were keenly bid for once again with a wonderful run from JW & TE Sharpe, Lyth peaking at £460 and £430. A Pickthall, New Hutton sold a 4 week old Blue heifer to £410. All Blue heifers forward averaged £315.

Younger Continental bred heifers were a strong trade selling between the £240 - £280 mark. A good show of dairy bred bull calves were forward which saw Friesians sell to £195 from Lawkland Hall with others to £145 from TW & CA Long, Ulverston, with the medium type rearing calves selling either side of £100.

Another fast trade was seen for all stirks forward today with Angus steers topping at £810 from RJS & DM Addison, Maulds Meaburn with Blues selling to £750 from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell and Limousin bullocks selling to £705 from F & TE Park, Crook.

A run of suckler red heifers from G McGregor, Carlisle sold to £690 at just 5 months old. Buyers were looking for well grown stirks today with the lesser end meeting a conservative trade.

STORES
The Whitsuntide saw an entry of 300 store cattle forward with the stronger end selling to a more selective trade, with reports of the deadweight price coming down in the last few weeks. A keen interest was shown for all yearling, grazing types selling to full value. The trade topped at £1160 for a Charolais bullock fromn J Twigge, Lindale with Angus bullocks from the same home selling to £1090. TA Chapman & Son, Helsington sold a lovely run of Limousin yearling bullocks selling to £1080 with others from the same good home selling to £1070.

Yearling Blue bullocks topped at £1060 from NA & J Temple, Ulpha. Many of the best suckler bred yearling bullocks were still selling at the £950 plus mark.

Once again heifers were keenly bid for at J36 with a lovely Limousin heifer from TA Chapman & Son selling to £1120, with a run of dairy bred Limousin heifers from TW Nelson, Stainton topping at £1035. Continental bred yearling heifers were regularly selling well over the £800 mark.

OTMS
Once againn NWA J36 saw a competitive trade for all classes of cull cows and OTM cattle with 11 active buyers ringside. Heavy, well fleshed beef cows sold to 179.5p/kg for Limousin x on two occasions from TW Gorst, Crook and E & S Bower, Blawith with other beef cows generally achieving 155p/kg - 170p/kg. Medium beef cows selling at 135p/kg - 150p/kg with keen interest in cows suitable for further finishing.
