CALVES
The fortnightly sale of calves saw a large entry of predominantly younger calves froward. Top priced bull calf was a Limousin x selling at £520 from J H Towers & Son, Tunstall whom sold others at £500. British Blue x bulls sold to £460 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth with others to £455 from J H Towers & Son, Tunstall. Simmental x bulls sold to £320 from Bambers Farm, Cockerham.
A large entry of native sired calves saw a top of £360 for Hereford x calves from J S & I M Wilson, Whitbeck with Aberdeen Angus x calves to £300 from J & M Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor and Shorthorns selling to £200 from RG & JA Clark, Endmoor.
Dairy bred bulls sold to a top price of £340 for well reared Holstein Friesians from J & B Morley, Appleby whom sold others to £275 and £260. Younger rearing Black and Whites sold to £120. Fleckvieh bull calves sold to £230 from JS & IM Wilson, Millom with others to £240 from W H Kitching, Helsington.
Heifer calves sold to a top price of £450 for a Limousin x from J H Towers & Son, Tunstall closely followed by British Blue calves achieving £420 from J & B Morley, Appleby with others selling to £400 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth and J H Towers & Son, Tunstall.
Simmental x heifers sold to £270 on two occasions from Bambers Farm, Cockerham whom also sold Charolais at £270. Young Hereford x heifers sold to £215 from TK Robinson & Sons, Old Hutton and JS & IM Wilson, Millom. Aberdeen Angus x heifers sold to a top price of £280 from J & M Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor
STIRKS
A keen interest in all classes of stirks saw steers sell to £740 for Shorthorns from PD & PJ Mason, Burton-in-Kendal whom sold Aberdeen Angus x at £720 and British Blues to £700. Younger stirks sold to £600 for British Blue x bulls from D Wightman, Heversham with others achieving £570. A ring full of Black and White steers from PD & PJ Mason, Burton-in-Kendal sold at £620. Heifer stirks sold to £630 for Limousin x from JA Knipe, Kendal with others achieving £600 from MW & MR Black, Staveley and BJ & M Tomlinson, Salwick. Younger stirks saw 4 month old Aberdeen Angus x heifers sell to £520 from B Butterfield, Burton.

STORES
Another competitive trade for all classes of store cattle saw a top price of £1240 achieved for an Aberdeen Angus x steer from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton. With Charolais x selling to £1060 from PS & H Eckersley, Mellor whom also sold British Blue x at £1040. Younger stores saw yearling Charolais steers sold to £950 as well as Limousin x at £940 from R & BJ Cleasby, Ulverston . Other Limousin x steers sold to £900 from F & JM Mason, Carnforth, with Luing steers from Low Moor Howe Farm selling to £885. A large entry of store heifers saw a top price of £1140 for a Simmental x from PS & H Eckersley, Mellor, with Limousin x selling at £1130 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton and Aberdeen Angus x to £1090 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook and British Blue x to £1060 from FI & ME Little, Kendal.
Yearling heifers sold to £920 for Limousin x from JA & JK Allen, Ings. Charolais x heifers sold to £870 from AMS Robinson, Staveley. Several consignments of store bulls forward sold to £890 for Luings from Low More Howe Farm. With an entry of 6-8month old bulls selling to £720 for British Blues from JH Barker & Son, Ulverston, Beef Shorthorn and Limousins sold to £680 from Thrimby Farm, Penrith.
OTM CATTLE
An increased entry of 63 cull and OTM cattle were forward at the first sale in July, which saw an increased entry of buyers in attendance, all keen to compete and secure all types and classes of stock. Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold to a top price of 187.5p/kg for a Limousin x from TW & C Shepherd, Underbarrow. Hereford x sold to 171.5p/kg from J Twigge, Grange-over-Sands whom also sold Belted Galloways at 104.5p/kg, as well as Simmentals, Shorthorns and Stabilisers at 167.5p/kg.
There was keen competition for cows suitable for further finishing with Limousin cows to 157.5p/kg from JR Corlett, Cockermouth, Aberdeen Angus x to 154.5p/kg from C I Briggs, High Wray and British Blue x at 154.5p/kg from MW & MR Black, Staveley. Dairy cows sold to at top of 151.5p/kg for a British Friesian from R & A Galbraith, Crooklands, with Holstein Friesians selling at 149.5p/kg from C Preston, Millom and 147.5p/kg from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck.
Top grossing beef cow today was an Aberdeen Angus from C I Briggs, High Wray selling at £1228.28, with the top grossing dairy cow selling at £1169.09 from C Preston, Whicham.
OTM heifers sold to 189.5p/kg for a Limousin from J Twigge, Grange-over-Sands with others regularly selling at 165p/kg to 185p/kg, to include the top dairy heifer at 184.5p/kg from JW Hargreaves, Woodland. The top grossing OTM heifer achieved £1217 for a Charolais from A Cottam, Kendal, with dairy heifers selling to £ 1086 JW Hargreaves, Woodland.
Several cull bulls forward sold to 169.50p/kg for a British Blue from WH Kitching & Son, with others selling to £1644 for a Hereford from Lawkland Hall Partnership, Lawkland.
BREEDING CATTLE
North West Auctions held its July Fair sale of breeding cattle and to start the sale off was a wonderful pedigree Limousin bull from Barlow Bros, Preston. After fast bidding it went on to sell for £3500. A selective trade was seen for all heifers and calves with buyers looking for well grown heifers with strong calves on. A great run of first cross blue heifers with Limousin calves from A Cottam, Crosthwaite sold to a top of £1950 with others from this run selling to £1850. ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth sold a run of first cross Limousin heifers with young Limousin calves at foot which sold to £1750 and £1720 respectively.
A big show of cows and calves were forward with all being keenly bid for. A British Blue cow with a smart Limousin heifer calf from I & AJ Armer, Burneside sold to a top of £1950 with other British Blue cows from the same home selling to £1850. Limousin cows from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth sold to a top of £1780, with many older cows in the market today regularly selling between the £1400 - £1500 mark.
