Prime Hoggs

The opening sale of the season for Prime Hoggs set off at a blistering trade and with an improved entry of 1085 hoggs forward. The overall market average was 237p/kg with an SQQ average of 242p/kg. All hoggs in the Market today averaged £101.12 and 30% of the hoggs forward sold in excess of the £110, with a full ringside of 10 active buyers.

It was a consignment from PD & P Mason, Burton in Kendal that led the way selling to a top of £123 with Texel hoggs. Beltex hoggs from the same home sold to £120 with plenty more in this consignment selling in excess of the £110 mark. Heavyweight Texels peaked at £120 from TM Potter, Orton with other Texels hoggs selling to £117.50 from DW Cottam, New Hutton and £117 from J Twigge, Lindale. Charollais sold to £117 from GM Metcalfe Jnr, Underbarrow. Suffolk hoggs peaked at £114.50 twice from G Riley, Bolton le Sands and DW Cottam, New Hutton followed by others selling to £114 from S Kellett & Sons, Pilling.

Upland hoggs sold to a top of £115 with Cheviots from S Crawford, Staveley. Mule hoggs this week peaked at £108 for 46kg hoggs from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow followed by others at £107.50 weighing 45kg from DJ Clarke, Underbarrow and £107 weighing 45kg from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Helsington. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £94.50 from Amy Harrison, Kentmere with Herdwick hoggs selling to £92 from Hazel Thompson, Selside.

This week’s top pence per kilo was 294p for Beltex hoggs from JG & PH Thompson, Selside with other Beltex hoggs selling to 290p/kg from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside. Plenty of pens of commercial Continental hoggs sold in excess of 250p/kg.

Cast Sheep

A reduced entry of 340 cast sheep were forward today with all selling to a strong demand and many more could easily have been sold with a full ringside of buyers present.

Texel ewes peaked at £140 from PK & R Woof, Stainton with many Texel ewes selling around the £115 mark. J Stott Jnr sold Charollais ewes to £131 and Beltex ewes from RA Batty, Selside topped at £130. A bigger show of Suffolk ewes were forward with this section averaging £108 and topping at £125 from G Riley, Bolton le Sands.

Mule ewes were the strongest trade of the day with a top of £110 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with many of the best, selling over the £100 mark. Medium Mule ewes with meat were selling at £85 - £90.

Hill ewes peaked at £101 for Cheviots from PK & R Woof, Stainton with Swaledale ewes from E Parker selling at £77, with the best selling well into the 70s and medium type Swaledale ewes were £60 - £65. Strong Herdwick ewes from KP & EJ Knight, Kirkby in Furness sold to £72.

Once again J36 had a strong trade for all cast rams forward with the best Texels selling to £145 from KJ Knight, Kirkby in Furness, with Beltex £138 from D & A Nicholson, Ulverston. Rough Fell tups peaked at £97 from I & J Mallinson, Selside.

All types of cast sheep are needed next week to fulfil buyers orders.
