Prime Hoggs
North West Auction’s J36 weekly sale had a very mixed entry in terms of quality with all types eagerly bid for and a very strong trade. The consignment of Beltex hoggs from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside sold to a top of £156. This consignment also achieved the top pence per kilo today selling a pair of 39kg Beltex to 370p/kg. This was followed by 351p/kg from J Twigge, Lindale with others from the same home selling to 338p/kg and 332p/kg. Beltex hoggs from B & EJ Chadwick & Son, Sowerby sold to 340p/kg, weighing 40kg or 136lb. The consignment of Texels from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping sold to a top of 326p/kg or £137, weighing 42kg. This consignment topped at £150 for a pen of eight 49kg hoggs, with others from the same home selling to £146 and £144. More of these best quality hoggs are needed in J36 with all Beltex averaging £142.
Heavy weight Lleyns sold to £143 from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens. Heavyweight Texels today topped at £152 from JM Metcalfe Jnr, Underbarrow with other Texels to £152 from J Twigge. Suffolk hoggs topped at £138 from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell with Charollais peaking at £135 from B & EJ Chadwick & Sons, Sowerby. With plenty of pens of Suffolk and Continental hoggs selling upwards of the £130 mark.
Upland hoggs saw Mules selling to a top of £125 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with 45kg Mules selling to £119 from AW & AM Clarke, Windermere. Herdwick hoggs peaked at £108 and weighing 41kg from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal with Rough Fells to £108 from AJ & CM Harrison, Kentmere. Swaledales peaked at £107 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside, with plenty of hill hoggs selling in excess of the £100 mark.

Cast Sheep
370 ewes were forward with all selling to another sharper trade on the week with strong heavy Texel ewes being the trade of the day, topping at £155 from H Geldard, Levens. With Texels out of Mules selling to £132 from R W & SE Nicholson, Lupton and also from the same home, suffolks sold to £131, with many selling in the £122 – £130 mark. RM & D Dixon, Longsleddale sold Leicesters to £138. Beltex ewes sold to £134 from Oyston & Mason, Bolton le Sands.
All Mule ewes forward averaged £97 with some being £5 – £8 up on the week. Mules topped at £114 from AW Crowe, Witherslack with other Mules to £111 from J Taylor, Kendal. Medium fit Mules were selling from £102 to £105 with the leaner ewes £85 – £90.
Once again at J36 all hill ewes were well bid for with Cheviots peaking at £121 from M Johnson, Milnthorpe with Rough Fells selling to £99 from BJ Bainbridge, Shap with others to £94 from AEA Harison, Kentmere. A wonderful run of ewes from A Hartley, Broughton in Furness, who sold Herdwicks to £82 and Swaledales at £80. Many strong Swaledales were selling in the mid £70 mark with the next level down £62 – £65.
There was another good show of cast rams with 30 forward. Texels sold to £166 from JE Nuttall, Old Hutton with others from the same home selling to £148 and Leicesters from WI & AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale selling to £126.
