Calves
There was a good show of 95 calves forward today with a strong demand for all types once again and a keen ringside of buyers. JW & TE Sharp, Lyth sold an outstanding run of British Blue bull calves to peak at £460 with others from the same home selling to £440. A Pickthall, New Hutton also sold Blue calves to £415. All Blue bulls forward averaged £320.
A young show of native bull calves were forward, with Herefords selling to £275 from Bambers Farm, with the same home selling Angus bulls to £270.
Blue heifers peaked at £400 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth, with other Blues selling to £330 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Charolais heifers topped at £320 from Bambers Farm. A big show of native bred heifer calves were forward with all being keenly bid for which saw Bambers Farm dominate the top prices with Angus heifers to £295 and Herefords to £245.
There was a bigger show of black and whites forward with the strongest trade seen for some time. Messrs Dennison, Ulverston topped this section at £215 with others from the same home selling to £205. Good rearing types were selling well over the £100 mark today with an overall average of £80 for all forward.
Stirks
Stirks continue to be a flying trade with many more needed to fulfil buyers demands, with turn out time just around the corner. Blue bulls sold to £790 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth, with Hereford bullocks selling to £720 from R Keith, Grange over Sands. A run of Blue heifers from A Prickett, Farleton sold to £550 with Messrs Young, Lindale selling Blue heifers to the same price.
The next sale of Calves and Stirks will be on Thursday 15th April with buyers already asking about entries.
Store Cattle
There was a fantastic trade throughout today’s sale with regular and new buyers in attendance looking for all types of stock, with the strongest, well finished stores being dearer on the fortnight. RG & LR Holmes, Warton set the trade alight with a Limousin bullock selling to £1560 with others from the same home selling to £1440, £1400 and £1380. John Barker, Moffatt sold an outstanding pen of 5 British Blue bullocks selling to £1345. Other strong Blue bullocks sold to £1280 from MJ Waller, Lupton and £1260 twice from P Whitton & Son, Burnside and S & M Cooper, Leece. A run of Angus bullocks from RJ Scott, Stainton sold to £127. Friesian bullocks topped at £1140 from S & M Cooper, Leece.
The heifer trade could only be described as the fastest seen at J36 for some time with an outstanding Limousin heifer from JD Whalley, Ulverston selling to £1510 with other heifers from the same home selling to £1490. P Whitton & Son, Burneside sold a great run of British Blue heifers peaking at £1430 and £1400.
Yearling and grazing cattle were a roaring trade with many more needed in the upcoming sales at J36. Parthenais bullocks sold to £1115 from ME & CA Duerdon, Ulverston with Limousin bullocks at 10 months old from JD & PH Thompson, Selside selling to £1110. The best yearling suckler bred bullocks were selling between £1000 - £1100.
Yearling heifers were once again a fast trade with British Blues selling to £1110 from HR & CA Hodgson, Barbon with many selling between £900 and £1000 mark.

OTM Cattle
Cull cows continue to keep pace with the prime beef trade with well fleshed beef cows selling to a premium. A Limousin cow from CM & CS Chapplehow, Penrith sold at 184.5p/kg with a Simmental x achieving 171.5p/kg from KG & LM Park, Witherslack. Numerous other beef cows were 145p/kg – 160p/kg with keen interest in cows suitable for further feeding.
Dairy cows sold to 154.5p/kg for a British Friesian from RM & ML Lowery, Holker with Holstein Friesians selling to 149.5p/kg from JM Barton & Son, Lupton. Other heavy and well fleshed cows were generally 130 – 145p/kg.
Top grossing cow today was £1272 for a Simmental x from KG & LM Park, Witherslack. All Cull cows forward averaged 144p/kg.
OTM heifers sold to 231.5p/kg for a British Blue x from KG & LM Park, Witherslack with others 169.5p/kg for British Shorthorn x from P Whitton & Son, Burneside.
Dairy heifers sold to 164.5p/kg from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness. Top grossing heifer achieving £1287 from KG & LM Park.
A single cull bull being a Hereford from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite sold at 139.5p/kg or £1442.
