J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock - Tuesday 22nd September

Pigs

The sale of Prime Pigs saw a fast trade from start to finish with all sold averaging 133p/kg and £126.

The top price of the day was achieved by the last pig to be sold, being a well finished Large White x hog from C Dean & LJ Brennand, Clapham selling at £152 who also sold gilts at £148. Pietrain x hogs and gilts from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake sold at £132. Large White gilts from W Stamper, Chipping sold at £132 and £131 and boars at £130. Tamworth boars from RA Holmes, Inskip sold at £122 and gilts £116.

Top p/kg today was achieved by Wendy Stamper with the best of her run of Large White x gilts achieving 155p/kg with others 146p/kg. Other gilts from RA Holmes, Inskip sold at 149p/kg. Top priced boars achieved 141p/kg from W Stamper.

The next sale of pigs is Tuesday 13th October for all classes. Vendors are encouraged to enter pigs to meet the current high buyer demand.

Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of prime lambs at J36 had an increased entry of 1604 forward selling to an overall market average of 206p/kg. Once again, buyers were paying the premium for well-finished lambs with leaner lambs harder to place. Leading the way today was 60kg Texels selling to £130 from P Thompson, New Hutton. Other Texel lambs sold £119 from AW & AM Clarke, Windermere and £115.50 from D & C Middleton, Burrow. Suffolk lambs sold to £119 from JE Read, Hutton Roof with others to £115 from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer. This week saw heavier lambs a sharper trade with pens regularly selling around the £110 mark.

Beltex lambs sold to 244p/kg from PD & P Mason, Burton in Kendal with plenty more pens of good conformation lambs selling in excess of 230p/kg with good export lambs regularly selling around to 220p/kg mark.

There was a larger number of hill bred lambs forward today that saw Mashams sell to £114 from JE Read, Hutton Roof. Mule lambs sold to £100 from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell followed by £99 from J & JA Burow, Gragrigg.

Cast Ewes

There were 550 ewes forward with all ewes selling to grazing type ewes be stronger on the week. Strong pure-bred ewes would be stronger on the week. Peaking the sale was a Suffolk ewe from BR Harrison, Staveley selling to £113. Texel ewes topped at £110 from R & E Ladds, Scalthwaiterigg with others twice selling to £109 from JG & PH Thompdon, Selside and PK & Woof, Stainton.

Strong pens of Mule ewes sold at the £80+ mark with a top of £89 from JW & A Matthews, Patton and £87 from D & C Middleton, Burrow. Medium type Mule ewes sold between £62 and £65. A big show of hill ewes forward, with all types well bid for.

Swaledale ewes peaked at £74 from RF & CR Hodgson with other Swales selling to £68 from J Handley & Son. Cheviot ewes sold to £73 from G Nelson, Brigsteer with Rough Fell ewes selling to £64 from PE Allen.

Cast rams were a strong trade for start to finish. Texel rams topped at £140 from J Fell, Old Hutton with others from the same good home selling to £130. R & E Lads, Scalthwaiterigg sold rams to £128. Bluefaced Leicester rams peaked at £108 from R &EA Gardner, Brigsteer.
