Christmas Show & Sale of Calves

A bumper entry of Calves for the Christmas show with 145 calves forward. Vendors must be thanked for the quality of calves put before our judge today Mr William Dawson. After much time he awarded his Champion to the First prized British Blue Bull from A Pickthall, New Hutton which later went on to sell for £450. JW & TE Sharp, Lyth were awarded the Reserve rosette with their First prize British Blue heifer later selling for £380.

Trade from start to finish was flying! Out of the show British Blue bulls from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg peaked at £475; all Blue bulls forward averaged £355. A big show of Simmental bulls forward with a top of £390 from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington and TW & CA Long, Ulverston selling their best to £385. Native bulls were a stronger trade than previous weeks with Angus bulls topping this section at £390 from MA & S Johns, Brough. Hereford bulls sold to £320 at 4 weeks old from JM Barton & Son, Lupton. It was good to see heifers well over the £400 mark, with Limousin’s topping at £410 from CM & CS Chappelhow, Clifton and Simmental heifers selling to £405 from TW & CA Long, Ulverston. MJ & K Ayrton, Thurnham sold a wonderful run of Blue heifers to a top of £400. Dairy bred calves were the trade of the day, Flekvieh bulls sold to £400 from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck with others from the same home selling to £310. Messrs Robinson, Old Hutton sold Dairy Shorthorns to £205. Black & Whites were all well bid for, MA & S Johns topped the trade at £210 with others selling to £205 from MJ & K Ayrton. Medium types selling between £60-£80, all forward average £94

A small show of weanlings forward, all selling to a full value. MJ & K Ayrton sold Simmental bulls to £615 with others from the same home selling to £610. Black and Whites were in strong demand selling to £545 from FP & G Slater, Grange over Sands.

Cull Cows & OTM Cattle

Once again an entry in excess of 50 Cull Cows and OTM Cattle were forward at NWA J36, all selling to a competitive trade with buyers reporting ahead of other local centres. We have the ability to handle more cows at each sale with all classes and types eagerly bid for.
The sale today topped at 157.5p/kg for a Limousin Cow from CM & CS Chappelhow, Penrith with others selling to 147.5p/kg from S & M Cooper, Leece. Beef bred cows meeting eager bidding for further finishing and generally selling at 110p/kg – 125p/kg depending on age and quality. Dairy Cows sold to 131.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from JJ & MA Park & Son, Sizergh with Holsteins selling to 121.5p/kg from JM Barton & Son, Lupton. Medium dairy cows generally 105p/kg – 115p/kg with the leaner and parlour types 85p/kg – 98p/kg.
The top grossing cow today was the Limousin from CM & CS Chappelhow, Penrith totalling £1173.
OTM Steers sold to a top price of 174.5p/kg for a Belted Galloway from RJ Stott, Stainton with others of the same breed grossing £1019.
Cull Bulls achieved a top price of 159.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from JE Wright & Son, Knutsford with a Charolais from JC Walling & Son, Lyth with a Limousin from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale grossing £1193.
OTM heifers saw a top price of 189.5p/kg for a Limousin x from S & M Cooper, Leece who also sold British Blue x at £1087.

Store Cattle

The concluding sale of Store Cattle in 2020 saw a fast trade for all forward with a large crowd of buyers in attendance keen to secure replacement stock with many leaving empty handed or with only half full trailers and lorries.
Steers saw a top price of £1,100 for 15 month old Limousin steers from AT Rogerson, Chipping who sold other steers from this good run at £1,050, £1,040 closely followed by Caley & Mitchinson, Troutbeck achieving £1,030. Charolais steers sold to £1,050 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth with others at £1,000 from CI Briggs, Wray. Younger continental steers sold to £870 for Blonde D’Aquitaine x from SM Richardson, Lupton and £860 for Limousin x from HM Hodgson, Old Hutton. Several suckled calves forward at today’s sale with a top price of £840 for 8 month old Limousin x from CI Briggs, Wray.
Store heifers sold to £1,100 for a British Blue x from AT Rogerson, Chipping who sold others at £1,050 and a super pen full of 13 month olds at £1,010. Charolais x heifers sold to £1,020 from JE Hadwin, Mansergh who sold Limousin x at £1,000. Suckled calves sold to £810 for a Limousin x from CI Briggs, Wray who sold others at £750 and £710 from J Alderson & Son, Howgill. Blonde D’Aquitaine x heifers from SJ & M Richardson, Lupton sold to £700 with others achieving £670.
Another good selection of Native sired store cattle attracted keen interest with several specialist purchasers in attendance. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £1,060 from JE Wright & Son, Knutsford with Whitebred Shorthorn x steers selling to £950 from SJ & M Richardson, Lupton. Hereford x steers sold to £890 from RJ Stalker, Blawith. Pure bred Beef Shorthorn steers 8 month old from AC & C Thexton, Lowick sold to £710.
Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £890 for JE Wright & Son, Knutsford. An entry of 10 month old Hereford x heifers from JR Senior, Cartmel sold to £620.
The next sale of store cattle is Thursday 7th January to include the New Year Prize Show & Sale of Store Cattle competing for the Janet Gorst Memorial Trophy. Buyers are already asking about this sale and keen to attend. Entries for the catalogue close Tuesday 29th December.
