J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock - Tuesday 18th August

Spring Lambs

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had 1486 forward selling to an overall average of 198p/kg. Lambs that were mostly in demand today were heavy weight, better conformation and well-fleshed. Leading the way this week at £121 was 53kg Texel lambs from E Dodgson, Kendal. This was followed by Charollais lambs at £118 from S & A Gardner, Far Arnside. Continental lambs peaked at £115 from G Wightman, Grange over Sands with Suffolk lambs peaking at £113 from S Coward, Alithwaite. Plenty more pens of heavy weight lambs sold in the region of £110. Better bred lambs sold in excess of 220p/kg, peaking this week at 242p/kg from R & J Dodgson, Natland purchased by Plumgarths Farm Shop.

There was a larger quantity of upland lambs on the market today with Mule lambs selling to a top of £96 from R & E Ladds, Kendal with other pens from the same home selling to £92. Horned lambs today with Rough Fells selling to £77 from E Dodgson.

Cast Ewes

There was an increased entry of cast ewes of 863 forward selling to a very similar trade to the previous week. Leading the way this week selling to £127 was Texels from RR & JA Knowles, Docker. This was closely followed by the consignment from Helen Newton, Low Levens selling Suffolks to £125 and Texels to £123. This week saw plenty of pens of good quality ewes selling in excess of £100 mark. Cheviot Mule ewes this week peaked at £98 from JC Dunning, Orton with Mule ewes peaking at £95 from Dave Dixon, Grayrigg. There was plenty of pens of strong mule ewes selling in the early eighties.

There was a large entry of horned ewes forward today that saw Swaledales sell to a top of £63 from WM & JE Shuttleworth, Barbon. Rough Fell ewes sold to £62 from E & K Bland, Tebay. Plenty of pens of strong horned ewes easily sold in the fifties. Leaner types of horned ewes continued to meet plenty of demand with feeding men in the market looking for all types.
