J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Sheep with Lambs & Primestock - Tuesday 14th May

Pigs

Pigs sell to £125 at NWA J36. An entry of 116 pigs were forward at the first sale in May with a nice number of prime pigs and weaners forward.

Prime pigs sold to £120 for gilts from AP & C Sharphouse, Bouth with others £119 from W Stamper, Chipping and £115 from D Baldwin, Satterthwaite. Prime pigs nicely selling between £95 and £115. Top p/kg was 114p/kg for a hog from JR Corlett, Cockermouth with other gilts and hogs generally 100p/kg – 110p/kg and boars 85p/kg – 100p/kg. Cull sows sold to £125 (63p/kg) for a Saddleback from JB Stephenson, Cockermouth and boars to £115 (35p/kg) from D Baldwin. Store pigs sold to £62 for Pietrain x Large White hogs and gilts from AJ & EP Platt, Barrow in Furness with Saddleback gilts to £61 from C & R Stewart, Stranraer. Weaners sold to £41 for Pietrain x from DB & RM Willison, Ingleton and CD Slinger, Burscough. Other weaners nicely selling at £28 - £40.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

There was a smaller entry of sheep with lambs at foot this week as to be expected following on from last week’s large entry. Once again, a nice entry of hoggs with lambs forward saw Continental hoggs with Texel lambs at foot sell to £170 from G & KM Atkinson, Colby with Mule hoggs and Texel lambs twice selling to £155 from the same home. Mule hoggs with Texel lambs sold to £150 twice from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. Ewes with lambs at foot sold to a top of £175 for Suffolk ewes with strong Suffolk lambs from D Koller, Over Kellet. Texel ewes with twin lambs at foot sold to £160 from Matson Farms Ltd, Windermere.

Spring Lambs

The weekly sale of Spring Lambs had a much increased number forward of 292 forward which saw an extra buyer ringside, but with large numbers of spring lambs out today meant the trade was easier. There as an overall market average of 221p/kg with handy weight lambs averaging 235p/kg. Topping the market today was W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe selling to a top of £109.50 with Texels selling to £105.50 from CD Slinger, Burscough. Suffolks sold to £101 from J & C Airey, Ulverston with Beltexs to £100.

Prime Hoggs

There was a smaller entry of hoggs as number begin to tighten that saw good quality hoggs in strong demand. Topping the market this week was Suffolk hoggs from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne. Beltex hoggs sold to a top of £101 from MB Flatman & Son, Over Wyresdale with other Texels selling to £100 from JG Harryman, Hawkshead. Plenty of pens of heavy weight hoggs easily sold into the nineties. Top pence per kilo was 237p/kg from JG Harryman with others selling to 228p/kg from B & R Barnes, Carnforth.

Cast Sheep

There was a smaller entry of Cast Sheep forward this week saw a plainer entry on offer. Leading the way this week was Leicester cast tups topping at £131 from Coward Brothers, Kikrby-in-Furness with others selling to £120 from BD Gill, Ingleton. Ewes sold to a top of £119 for Beltexs from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg with other Beltex ewes selling to £114 from D & DW Prickett, Farleton. Texel ewes sold to £113 from P & SA Edmondson, Stainton. Ewes from J & C Airey, Ulverston sold to £111 for Suffolks and £109 for Texels with other Texel ewes selling to £108 from AE Atkinson, Crook. Mule cast ewes topped at £89 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook. Horned sheep sold to a top of £66 from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside and £65 for Swaledales from WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale, who also sold Swaledale tups to £70.
