Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had an entry of 771 forward with a lot of out of specification hoggs on offer. There was a major shortage of good quality well-fleshed hoggs, but hoggs that were finished and within specification were in the strongest demand but a less trade as seen at other markets at the start of this week.

Leading the way this week, was 46kg Beltex hoggs from JG Harryman, Hawkshead selling to £105 or 228p/kg with others from the same home selling to 229p/kg and 227p/kg. Other leading prices for Beltexs was £100 from R Braithwaite, Low Bentham. Suffolks sold to a top of £96 for heavyweight hoggs from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton, with plenty of heavyweight hoggs selling into the eighties. There was an overall market average of 173p/kg.

Cast Sheep

There was a slightly smaller entry of cast ewes with all types selling to a sharper trade with leaner ewes especially dearer. There were less heavyweight Continental ewes today, but those forward were in strong demand topping at £119 for a Suffolk from D Metcalfe, Dalton-in-Furness with Beltex ewes from R Braithwaite, Low Bentham selling to £115, others from the same home sold to £108. Strong Mule ewes were good to sell topping at £71 from M Blease, Carnforth with others to £70 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth. Hill bred ewes continue to be a good trade at J36 with Cheviots to £65 from WL & F Richards, Beckside. A strong pen of Swaledale ewes from Calderside Farms, Garstang topped the horned section at £58, with others to £55 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

More cast rams forward today sold another competitive trade topping at £85 for a Suffolk CG Birkett, Carnforth with Texels to £80 from TH & D Cornthwaite & Son, Cartmel Fell.

More heavyweight ewes are needed to fulfil buyer’s requirements.
