North West Auctions Christmas Show and Sale of Pigs
There was one of the largest entry of pigs forward at today’s sale which was the last one in 2019. A feature of today’s sale was the Christmas Show for pairs of Prime Pigs which was kindly judged by Mr Fred Gibson of Kirkby Lonsdale.
The Championship rosette was awarded to a pair of Pietrain x Large White gilts from JR Corlett & Son, Cockermouth, which sold at £168 to Browns Quality Meats, Lindal as a Christmas treat for their customers. 2nd prize was a pair of Pietrain x gilts from Wendy Stamper, Chipping selling at £118 with WE Gregson, Wrea Green achieving £110 for the 3rd prize pair of Large White x gilts.
Prime pigs (95kg – 110kg) generally selling at £100 - £130 with mediums 88kg – 92kg achieving £90 - £105. Lighter weights, 70kg – 80kg generally £85 - £110. All prime pigs today averaged £100 and 108p/kg.
Cull sows sold to £130 (58p/kg) from AJ & EJ Platt, Barrow in Furness with others £125 (51p/kg) from RA Holmes, Inskip. All cull sows forward averaged £75 and 40p/kg.
There was a reduced entry of stores and weaners today selling to £51 for Maxi-grow x stores from AJ & EJ Platt, Barrow in Furness. Coloured weaners sold to £35 for Saddleback x from A Diss, Ulverston with others achieving £33 from DC Miller, Garstang
