Prime Pigs

Prime Pigs Sell to £135 and 137p/kg at NWA J36

The sale of prime pigs saw an entry of 53 forward and selling to another strong trade with buyers competing for all classes and types. Prime gilts sold to £132 for a Duroc x Large White from DC Morley, Auchenblae with Pietrain x to £130 from NJ Wilkinson, Barrow in Furness. Other gilts sold to £128 for Large Blacks, £125 Hampshire x and £122 for Large White x. Prime boars sold to £130 for Duroc x from DC Morley with Large White x to £126 from D & E Monk, Bispham.

Top pence per kilo today was 137p/kg for Large White x from D & E Monk with other white pigs 125p/kg – 130p/kg. Coloured pigs sold to 132p/kg for Duroc x from DC Morley. Lighter weights 95p/kg – 105p/kg depending on colour and finish. All pigs today forward averaged 119p/kg.

A cull sow from W Stamper sold at £135 (66p/kg).

Prime Lambs

There was a smaller entry of 800 Prime Lambs this week due to many vendors being on a six-day standstill as well as many taking advantage of the good weather. There was an overall market average of 173p/kg and an SQQ of 176p/kg. Leading the way was a consignment from E Dodgson, Kendal selling heavy weight Texel lambs to £91.50 and £89.50 with other Texel lambs selling to £88.50 from JA Chapman, Singleton Park and £88 from D Nicholson, Ulverston. Suffolk lambs topped this week at £82 from D Metcalfe, Dalton-in-Furness. Mule lambs sold to a top of £74 three times from JA Bennett, Longsleddale, ST & SE Allen, Tebay and M Robinson, Lowgill. Handy weight Texel lambs sold to a top of 216p/kg and 214p/kg from DH Ashworth, Holme with Charollais selling to 202p/kg from M Moorhouse, Grange-over-Sands.

Cast Sheep

There was also a reduced entry of Cast Ewes with just 230 forward selling to a sharper trade. Leading the way this week was Texel ewes from Helen Newton, Low Levens followed by £91 from CC & HM Roberts, Tebay. Texel cast rams topped at £90 from J Drinkall Ltd, Chorley who sold Cheviot rams to £85. Mule ewes sold to a top of £69 from D Nicholson, Ulverston with Mashams selling to £67 from JA Bennett, Longsleddale with plenty more strong Mule ewes selling in the sixties. Hill bred ewes sold to a top of £70 for Cheviots from GC & G Taylor, Crook and Rough Fells to £69 from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell.
