J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Thursday 22nd August

Calves

There was a strong entry of 106 calves forward with buyers keen for all classes and types.

Bull Calves sold to £370 for a Limousin X from V & EJ Chadwick, Preston and TW & CA Long, Ulverston. Nature bred Bulls sold to £270 for a Hereford X from Lawkland Hall LTD. Nice rearing beef Bulls were generally £240 to £290, with the youngest sorts £170 to £220. Beef Heifer calves topped todays sale with a Limousin X from V & EJ Chadwick & Son, Preston achieving £450 with others for Suckler replacements selling between to £290 to £360.

Dairy Bulls sold to £190 for Flekvieh from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby with Friesian from CM & CS Chapplehow, Penrith selling at £160. Rearing Bulls sold between £80 and £120 with mediums between £50 and £70.

Stirks attracted keen interest from farmers looking for replacement stock and sold to £485 for British Blue X & Limousin heifers with a nicely reared 3-month-old Limousin X Heifer from Miss C Long selling at £360. Steer Stirks sold to £405 for 3-month-old Limousin X from GM Strong, Penrith. A consignment of Heifer Steers sold to £290 for 4-month-old from GG & MA Long.

Bulls sold to £550 for Limousin X 6-month-old.

Cast Cows

More cows forward as the weather shows the start of Autumn. Plenty of buyers ringside and another good entry required at the next sale on the 5th September.
Well-fleshed beef cows regularly selling around the 125p/kg mark and topping at 135p/kg for Stabiliser X from A Dixon & Son, Selside. Dairy cows sold to 125p/kg for Flekvieh from J Scott & Co, Cartmel with other heavy, meated dairy cows sold to 108p/kg and 115p/kg. Medium cows of all breeds were 100p/kg to 110p/kg depending on age and quality with only the leanest less.

Cull Bulls sold to 117p/kg for a Charolais from AW Irvine, Ambleside and £1177 for a Limousin from K Wrathall, Broughton-in-Furness.

OTM Heifers forward sold to 117p/kg from JM Barton & Son, Lupton and £699 Aberdeen Angus X from JD Hayhurst, Milnthorpe.

Store Cattle

A nice entry of cattle forward with buyers now looking for cattle to yard for finishing alongside farmer buyers for the longer keep cattle.

The sale topped at £960 for a 14-month-old Charolais X Steer from SH Wightman, Milnthorpe and a 22-month-old British Blue X Steer from S&M Cooper, Leece. Other 15-month-old Limousin X Steers sold to £900 from SH Wightman and £900 was also achieved for Aberdeen Angus X Heifers from S & M Cooper, Leece.
Younger Heifers sold to £840 for British Blue X from Caley & Mitchinson, Troutbeck and £670 for Limousin X Steers from GM Strong, Penrith. Sucklers sold to £640 for 6-month-old from JA Ariey, New Hutton with Simmental X Bulls to £605 from C McGuckin, Grange Over Sands.

The next sale of Store Cattle will be on Thursday 5th September to include The Annual Show & Sale of Continental Store Cattle. Entries close Wednesday 28th August.
