Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 28th September

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle had a catalogued entry of 452. Cattle forward today reflected signs of a hard dry summer with lack of meat. The trade today topped at £1410 for British Blue Steer from H & JA Gorst, Preston which was closely followed by a Blonde from P & R Galligan, Stockport selling to £1400 who also sold others to £1330 and £1300. An Angus Heifer from IG Haworth, Pilling sold to £1300 with other Angus’ selling to £1230 from RJ Cardwell, Preston. Store Bulls today sold to £1100 for a Charolais from P & R Galligan .

Black and white stores sold to £950 from B & J Preston, Caton with others to £860 from H Birkett & Son.

OTM Cattle

A slightly smaller entry of 125 cast cows forward today with a plainer and typical autumnal show of cattle on offer. Topping the trade today was Limousin Cow selling to 179.5p/kg from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man with Barlow Brothers selling a Limousin cow to £1195. Heifers sold to a top of 129.5p/kg from S Kellet & Son, Pilling for a Friesian. Top grossing price of the day was £1365 for a Cast Limousin Bull from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale.

All cattle forward today averaged 106.68p/kg.

Calves and Stirks

The monthly sale of stirks had a mixed show on offer. Well-grown Black and Whites from R & H Jollys, Garstang selling to £390 with Hereford heifers from the same good home selling to £430. The trade topped at £540 for British Blue Steers from MD Close & Son, Arkholme who also sold heifers to £470. Native steers today sold to £440 for Angus’ from MD Close with heifers from the same good home selling to £410.

There was a reduced entry for calves today with people busy getting grass. Topping the trade today was JE & AC Clarke, Melling selling a Limousin Heifer to £370, with Limousin Bull calves topping at £285 from the same home. Hereford calves today topped at £200 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Hereford heifers, also from Wallbank Farms, topped at £152. Black and white calves topped at £78 from WN &D Smith, Cockerham.
