Pigs
The fortnightly sale of Prime pigs had a of 19 pigs forward for the sale. The trade topped at £142 for Pietrain hogs with gilts to £135 from D Nicholson, Cockermouth who also topped the trade at 129p/kg. Good conformation, well-finished white pigs sold in excess of 110p/kg mark. There was an overall market average of 105p/kg.
The next sale of pigs will be on Tuesday 9th October.
Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an entry of 1171 forward selling to an overall market average of 158p/kg. The trade saw well-finished fed lambs eagerly bid for with grass fed and leaner types harder to place, with very little demand for lean tup lambs. The trade topped at £98 for Texel lambs from SP Pease, Underley with Suffolk lambs selling to £97 from J & C Airey, Ulverston. Beltex lambs sold to a top of £92 or 195p/kg from JG Harryman, Hawskhead. Smarter conformation Beltex and Texel lambs sold around the 190p/kg mark. Mule lambs sold to a top of £78.50 from JG Harryman.
Vendors are strongly advised to ensure that Lambs are properly finished for the prime ring with leaner types best marketed through the store ring.
Cast Sheep
There was an entry of over 500 cast ewes forward with, once again, a large number of lean ewes on the market. Heavy, well-fleshed ewes continue to be a reasonable trade, with a shortage of these ewes on the market. The trade topped at £98 for Texels from J & C Airey, Ulverston with Leicesters selling to £87 from WM & JE Shuttleworth, Barbon. Beltex ewes topped at £82 from D & DW Prickett, Farleton. Cheviot ewes topped at £74 from S & B Capstick, Old Hutton. Mule ewes sold to £70 from SP Pease, Underley with fit Mules selling in the mid to late sixties. Horned ewes topped at £53 with Swaledales from RI Dixon, Low Newton and Rough Fells from John Ridding, Kendal. Meated horned ewes sold around the forty pound mark.
