J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock Tuesday 6th March

Prime Hoggs

There was a bumper entry of prime hoggs forward this week with over 1000 forward due to the quick spike in price with the bad weather endured at end of the previous week. There was an extremely mixed entry in terms of quality of hoggs today with a lot of end of season consignments and vendors taking advantage of the good trade. Well-finished hoggs were in really strong demand and eagerly bid for. Heavy weight well-fleshed hoggs were often selling in excess of £115 with best conformation hoggs were selling over £120. Topping the trade at £133 was T & SM park of Millom with Texel hoggs closely followed by JC Walling and Son of Crossthwaite selling to £127. Beltex hoggs topped twice at £124 from JG Harryman of Hawkshead and MW & MR Black of Staveley, with all Beltex hoggs in the market averaging 264p/kg. More hill bred hoggs on offer saw well-finished hoggs in strong demand and easily sold. Mules sold to a top of £107 from JG Harryman, weighing 46kg, with best pens of Mules easily selling in excess of 230p/kg. Cheviots sold to £105 GM & A Jackson of Little Eccleston or to 240p/kg from Naddle Farm of Shap.

Cast Sheep

There was a big jump in the cast ewe trade from the previous week, especially for the big well-fleshed ewes as numbers nationally tighten. Topping the trade was R Harker and Son of Grayrigg selling to £133 for Charollais tups. Best Continental ewes sold to £120, twice, for Beltex ewes from AR & BJ Thompson of Selside and Texel ewes from JC Dunning of Orton. Plenty of Continental ewes were selling round £110. Best Mule ewes sold around the £100 mark topping at £102 from DJ Thompson of Old Hutton. Horned ewes sold to a top of £81 from Amy Harrison of Kentmere for Rough Fells with plenty of good fit rough ewes selling in the seventies. Swaledale ewes sold to £77 from F & SA Edmondson of Ulverston. Leaner ewes were also a sharper trade.
