Calves
The sale of rearing calves, once again, saw an increased number forwards and perhaps a younger show of calves this week compared to recent sales, but buyers were, again, competing for all classes and types. Beef bulls sold to £310 on two occasions for Aberdeen Angus x from V & EJ Chadwick and British Blue x from RG & JA Clark, other bulls generally sold to £250 - £300. Heifers sold to £295 for Simmental x from M & C Booth with a British Blue achieving £292 from JW & D Robinson & Sons. Younger heifer calves sold to £175 - £225.
Dairy bulls were forward in much greater numbers and sold to a topping trade with Montbeliarde Bulls achieving £170, Shorthorns £128 and young Fleckviehs £92. Friesian bulls sold regularly over £100 with best rearers £125 - £165, Mediums £85 - £110 with only the very smallest and youngest less. All Friesians sold average £84.
Keep these calves coming with those sold today dearer than other local centres.
Cast Cows
Cull cows achieved an overall market average of 117p/kg for an entry of entirely dairy bred cows and those being predominantly out of parlour sorts. Cows sold to 137.5p/kg from T Edmondson & Son with others generally 120p/kg – 130p/kg, leaner cows were 100p/kg – 115p/kg dependant on weight. Top grossing cow this sale was a Friesian from PW & D Swindlehurst achieving £915 with others at £900. A cull bull from G & ID Postlethwaite achieved 119.5p/kg.
Buyers requesting more cows of all classes and types to meet current demand.
Store Cattle
The sale of store cattle saw a buoyant trade once again, with a buyers still keen to secure replacement stock of all types. Today’s sale had a wide range of cattle on offer with everything eagerly bid for. Several older cattle, 15 – 18mo, sold to a top price of £890 of Aberdeen Angus heifers from J Robinson, Hereford heifers were close behind at £850 from G & ID Postlethwaite. Younger heifers sold to £780 for 8mo Blonde heifers from R Keith with others to £710 for 6mo from the same home.
Steers sold to £880 for Aberdeen Angus from J Robinson with best young steers (8mo) to £850 from R Keith and £790 for Hereford x from JH & S Metcalfe & Son. Younger steers, 8-10 mo, generally £680 - £750. A pair of Longhorn steers from A Bond sold at £755.
