J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Show & Sale of Suckled Calves - Thursday 12th October

Suckled Calves

North West Auctions held their first suckler calf show and sale of the year on Thursday 12th October. Two classes were put before our judges Mr Stephen Chapman and Mr Derek Bateman where a tremendous show of calves was forward for the show. After much deliberation, the judges eventually gave the champion rosette to lot 269 a British Blue heifer from M & D Hatton, Knott End Farm, Broughton-in-Furness, which later went on to sell for £1040. Huge thanks go to today’s judges and our sponsors, Rural Law Practice Thomson Hayton Winkley and Boehringer.

With the last months weather some suckler calves today were looking a little weathered and buyers today were looking for well-grown cattle, with grouped cattle selling to a strong interest. Topping the sale was the 2nd prize bullock from M & D Hatton £1280, with a pen full of Limousin bullocks at just 6 months old from PW Clarke making £960. Charolais bullocks were keenly bid for topping at £1000 from JC Walling & son. Topping the heifer trade was the champion with the 2nd prize heifer, a Limousin, making £940 from DJ Clarke.

Calves

Just short of a 100 Calves were forward for sale at Junction 36 today, which saw all sections meeting a solid trade in line with other sale centres, even though many purchasers were stuck in Motorway traffic.

Beef calves were an exceptional trade as normal at J36, with the trade topping at £510 for a Limousin Bull Stirk from DR&C Galbraith of Sunny Bank Farm and Hereford Stirks from MJ Waller of Carlingwha achieving £425. Top price calf of the day was forward from R&J Dodgson of Cracalt Farm, with a Limousin Bull selling for £375, with others from the same home selling to £365 and £330. Heifer Calves sold to £350 for a British Blue from Messrs Robinson of Strickley and Limousin Heifers to £300 from R&J Dodgson of Cracalt Farm.

Black & White calves were good to sell, with purchasers looking for stronger calves, with dobby calves reaching realistic prices. Montbeliardes topped the dairy bred section, selling to £165 and £160 both from Colby Farms Ltd of Appleby. Holstein calves selling to £125 from GJ & HB Fitzwilliam of Moorhouse Farm, followed by a calf at £100 from GR Park & Sons.

Next sale of calves – Thursday 26th October, vendors are encouraged to inform the office of entries to enable canvassing of buyers.
