Prime Lambs

There was a far better trade for prime lambs this week, with more forward selling 15 pence up on the week and to an overall market average of 170p/kg. There continues to be a strong demand for Beltex export lambs at J36 with them selling to a top of £98.50 or 239p/kg from JG & PH Thompson of Poppy Farm, closely followed by TR Prickett of Hutton Roof selling to 222p/kg or £89 and BJ Bowness selling to 218p/kg or £91.50, all Beltex lambs sold to a market average of 209p/kg.

Heavy weight, well-finished lambs were in strong demand selling to a top of £96 for 53kg Texels from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Hall Farm with plenty of heavy weight, well-fleshed good conformation Continental and Suffolk lambs selling into the eighties. There was more interest in Mules today with all Mule lambs forward selling to a market average of 161p/kg. Mule lambs sold to a top of £73 from Chris Jackson of Springs Farm and £72.50 from JA Bennett of Middale Farm.

Cast Sheep

There was, once again, an entry in the mid four hundreds for cast sheep, selling to a slightly sharper trade then seen over previous weeks. Best Continental ewes sold in excess of £100, topping at £115 from Thomas Wilson of Ashteads for Texel ewes, with AW Crowe of Ashtree Cottage selling Texels to £109 and Zwartbles from GM & A Jackson of Little Eccleston. Mule ewes sold to a top of £74 for a pen of 14 big ewes from KE Richards of Crook O Lune Farm with big Mules regularly selling around the seventy-pound mark. Fitter horned ewes sold into the forties with best meated horned ewes selling over the fifty pound mark.
