TEN BUYERS AND A DEARER TRADE !
North West Auctions Lancaster had forward a reduced entry of 1525 prime lambs which was definitely affected by the inclement weekend weather. The sale averaged a very pleasing 203.5p/kg with standard lambs up to 40kgs averaging 207p/kg. It was great to see even more buyers in the ring as the Monday morning sale continues to find favour with several buyers needing lambs for an early kill. A top price of 248p/kg went to JJ & M Metcalfe, Orchard House whose superb Texel lambs weighed 40kgs and sold at £99 per head being purchased by Messrs Vivers, of Dornock Town. Once again lighter weight lambs were in most demand but there was demand for all classes of lambs on the day including hill bred lambs which were also good to sell and at prices well in advance of this time last year.
A total of 78 cast sheep were forward averaging £85 per head being similar on the week. A top price of £106 per head went to G Sagar & Son, New Parkside Farm whose pen of Texel ewes were purchased by Michael Lomax of Bolton.
Butchers beef in great demand. An improved entry of prime cattle included several quality consignments from regular vendors. Ambrose Rayton of Winston topped the trade with a Limousin x heifer which made 200p/kg (£966) and was purchased by Steve Seddon of J Seddon & Co. Mr Rayson also sold cattle to 198.5p/kg and 197.5p/kg to Roy Schofield who was buying on behalf of MJ Birtwistle & Co., butchers of Worsley and Samuel Howarth Ltd, butchers of Diggle. Mr Schofield had orders for more cattle on the day. An improved entry of 26 prime bulls averaged an excellent 168p/kg being perhaps a penny or two dearer than the previous week. Trade topped at 178.5p/kg being a price achieved three times. Firstly by Mrs JA Airey, Old Croft for a Limousin purchased by Bowland Foods of Preston. Then Messrs Clark & Johnson sold two Limousin bulls both purchased by Mr G Blacklidge of Chorley at 178.5p/kg. Messrs S & BM Lawrenson, Northwoods continue to sell quality heavy bulls and they also topped the market with a Saler bull at £1132 which was purchased by J Seddon & Co.
