LAMB TRADE BETTER THAN EXPECTED
North West Auctions Lancaster held their weekly sale of prime stock. The best entry of lambs yet this year saw more than 1400 head through the ring with trade improving through the sale to reach a pleasing average of 205p/kg for all weights and grades which was rather better than expected on the day. A top price of 228p/kg went to S Wilson & Son, Burrow Heights Farm whose 38kg Texel lambs made £86.50 and were purchased by Woodhead Bros., of Colne. Lambs also sold to a top of £100 each for Suffolk lambs from M & RW Stirzaker, Station Hotel and these were purchased by Lancaster Meat Co. Ltd.
An improved entry of cast ewes were a tremendous trade to average £80.54 for all breeds topping at £119 to S Wilson & Son, Burrow Heights Farm. With several active ewe buyers now operating every Monday it is hoped that more ewes will come forward over the coming weeks.
In the prime cattle ring all cattle were rather dearer on the week with several buyers waving their hands on the day. Clean cattle sold to a top price of 186.5p/kg. This price was achieved in the heifer section by TH Garnett & Son, New Close for a Bazadaise purchased by Roy Schofield on behalf of Samuel Howarth Ltd butchers of Diggle. The same price was achieved by HW Fortune of Pyethornes Farm for a Limousin bullock purchased by MJ Birtwistle Butchers. Close behind at 185.5p/kg was British Blue bullock from Mr Fortune which was purchased by Frank Towers of Wray. Heifers also sold to 180.5p/kg for British Blue from A & F Bennett, Wild Boar Farm and purchased by CJ Bowker butcher of Bolton-le-Sands.
In the bull ring a reduced entry were a sharper on the week selling to a top of 169.5p/kg (£1010) for a Continental bull from S & BM Lawrenson, Northwoods Farm which was purchased by Bowland Foods. A similar bull was sold by TD & A Gardner, Larbreck Hill Farm, this time purchased at 168.5p/kg by MJ Birtwislte. Top price bull per head this week was a Limousin sold by PW Clarke, Woodside for £1127.63 to J Seddon & Co.
