SPRING LAMBS DEAREST TRADE YET SEEN AT LANCASTER
North West Auctions Lancaster had forward a smaller entry of prime sheep this week. There were more buyers in the ring and it was no wonder because trade was tremendous from start to finish.
Lambs could have been sold three times over, averaging almost 290p/kg for all breeds and grades. Top price of 318p/kg went to Andrew Butler, Parks Farm, whose 40kg Texel lambs made £127 each, purchased by Geoff Riley, butcher of Rawtenstall. The highest priced head on the day went to M & R W Stirzaker, Station Hotel, whose Charollais lambs went on to make £135 and were purchased by Lancaster Meat Co Ltd.
Prime hoggs continue to trickle in to the market and anything of any quality was a very good trade on the day. Medium weight hoggs averaged 236.5p/kg, topping at 271p/kg (£122 – T & E Burrow, Throstle Grove), these were purchased by Lancaster Meat Co., Ltd. Hoggs also sold to £129 to R S & I M Kellet, Mill House for Texel hoggs again purchased by Lancaster Meat Co. Ltd.
Cast Sheep numbers continue to rise at Lancaster and these were, once again, a super trade averaging £93.50, topping at £132 to T R Prickett, Hutton Roof Hall. Cast Rams averaged £108, topping at £119 to R Collinge & Son, The Dingle.
A reduced entry of Prime Cattle were a decent trade on the day reflecting the quality put before local butchers and wholesalers. A top price of 171.5p/kg went to Messrs T H Garnett & Son, New Close for a Limousin steer purchased by Roy Schofield for M J Birtwistle & Co., Butchers of Worsley. Prime Heifers sold to 169.5p/kg for a Limousin from Messrs J S & K M Wilson & Son, High House purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd., Butchers of Diggle.
The best entry of Prime Bulls for some time was a welcome sight to all buyers and all bulls were in demand. A top price of 170.5p/kg went to E & N Wright & Sons, Allcocks Farm for a British Blue bull purchased at £1059 on the day.
