Lancaster Monthly Dairy Sale - Monday 21st August 2017

Posted Tuesday, 22 August 2017, 11.24am

A bumper entry was seen this month at Lancaster’s Dairy Sale, with 62 cattle being placed under the hammer, including consignments from new vendors. An active ringside of buyers ensured that trade remained buoyant throughout the day, with vendors leaving satisfied and purchasers impressed with both the quantity and quality forward for sale.

Top price of the day was achieved by AB&J Parkinson & Son of Out Rawcliffe for their pedigree heifer ‘Liscabank Asterix Sweet’, noted as giving 35kgs daily and being 14 days calved. This heifer proved to be not just ‘Sweet’ by name, when looking back at the strong pedigree behind this heifer going back to its 11th dam there is an excellent classification history of both VG and Excellent. This lot proved to see strong interest with the hammer falling at £2200. Messrs Parkinson’s consignment (including a 2nd calver) averaged £2026.

Four of the lots offered for sale today achieved the £2,000 mark. First the Champion from the pre-sale show (1st prize Halter Led Heifer) from JJ&G Eastham of Samlesbury. Their pedigree heifer, ‘Samlea Goodwhone Tilda’ was noted as being 25 days calved and giving 31kgs daily.

Next on the list being ‘Pennine Peace 704’ from the Drinkall Family of Over Wyresdale. Peace 704 was recorded as giving 36kgs and being 25 days calved.

H&SD Cornthwaite & Son of Kirkland, with the Reserve Champion, also hit the £2000 mark with ‘Kirkwood Free Emily’ giving 35kgs daily.

The final animal in the ring went out on a high, ‘Highgro Steady Crocus 2’ from Enchanted Holsteins of Elswick, a strong milky heifer, freshly calved giving 32kgs also achieving £2000.

A strong average of £1697.47 was achieved for all newly calved heifers forward.
