Spring Lambs
There was an entry of 66 spring lambs forward for the annual easter show and sale of spring lambs. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Morgan Helliwell who we thank for giving up his time and expertise. The championship rosette was awarded to JD & V Towers of Camp House with a Beltex cross Charolais gimmer lamb with the reserve champion being awarded to the Dorset x lamb from FE & CM Robinson and Son of Warth Sutton Farm. The champion young farmer lamb was awarded to Josh Sutcliffe of Cockerham.

The trade topped at £120 or 261p/kg for the champion from JD & V Towers of Camp House selling to Lakes and Dales butcher of Claughton on Brock with lambs from the same home selling to £119 and £118. The reserve champion being awarded to the Dorset x lamb from FE & CM Robinson and Son of Warth Sutton Farm sold to £100. There were six active buyers ringside looking for spring lambs with lambs also selling to local butchers Lakes and Dales of Claughton on Brock, Halton Village Butchers of Halton, R & S Norman of Heysham, Mercer Traditional Butcher of Bamber Bridge and Gregory Williams of Lancaster. We thank all our buyers for their continued support, a market average of 226p/kg to include a large proportion of lamb’s forward first cross out of the mule.


Prime Hoggs
A few less prime hoggs in the market today with 350 forward selling to a market average of 174p/kg sharper than the previous week. Beltex types hoggs selling in excess of 200p/kg topping at 213p/kg from Kevin Purtill of Hindley Green with plenty of pens of white faced hoggs selling either side of 190p/kg. The trade topped at £94 for Beltex cross hoggs from Ian Richardson of Goosnargh. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £78 from WG & E Sutcliffe of Lathwaite with all mules forward selling to a market average of £73.32.


Cast Sheep
A similar number of 80 cast sheep forward as the previous week. The trade topped at £94 for Suffolk cross ewes from WN & D Smith of Cocker House Farm with plenty of continental and Suffolk ewes selling in to the eighties. Mule ewes sold to a top of £75 from George Sanderson of Catforth.


Breeding Sheep
A few less sheep with lambs then the previous week as many hold off for the show and sale of sheep with lambs next week. The trade topped at £180 for 3 and 4 crop continental ewes with Texel lambs at foot from Lady Farm Partnership with Mule ewes and Suffolk twin lambs selling to £172. Continental ewes with single Texel lambs from the same good home sold to £135 and £130. A larger number of broken mouthed mules on the market selling in the region of £160.
