J36 - Blue Faced Leicesters - Friday 18th September

Posted Friday, 18 September 2015, 10.17am

The annual show and sale of Bluefaced Leicesters at J36 Rural Auction continues to grow in size each year with a catalogued entry of over 200 breeding rams and females forward. The sale attracted many regular and fresh vendors. A selective trade was endured as seen at other Leicester sales this autumn with purchasers very selective.

The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr John Townson of Clitheroe. An impressive show of sheep was put out for each class, especially the ram classes with over twenty entries. It was in fact the winner of the ram lamb class, from Brian and Jayne Knowles of High Borrow Bridge, with a very smart modern ram lamb that went onto take the overall championship with the reserve champion being awarded to the shearling ram from AC & K Pye and Son of Dunkenshaw.

The Leicester females sold to a top of £480, bred by AR Edmondson of Hawkswell and was kindly donated by Andrew Thompson of Carnforth with funds raised being donated to Macmillan Cancer Support and was bought by Rod Dixon of Wellfoot. Gimmer lambs sold to £200 from Andrew Gibson of Longwell.

The tup trade saw buyers looking for well grown rams which had plenty of good crossing breeding in their genetics. After their success of winning with the Mule Gimmer Lambs at the NWA J36 NEMSA sale the rams forward from the Inman family of Strickland Hill created a lot of interest and shearlings sold to a top price of £1,320 with others from the same home selling to £920. Aged rams sold to a top of £1,250 for a two shear that had been siring a lot of good well for AJ Benson of Gamswell Farm.

Well grown ram lambs where eagerly bid for selling to a top price of £1,000 from Anthony Price of Penrith, whilst Peter Fell’s impressive run of mule gimmer lambs saw his ram lambs sell to £980 ad Messer’s Lord of the Hewgill flocks sold tup lambs to £950.

Auctioneer Ian Atkinson said about the sale “A selective trade with buyers looking to purchase well grown correct Leicester tups with good crossing genetics.”
