Store cattle a slightly sharper trade

Store Cattle

The trade today at Lancaster was slightly sharper with more buyers around the ring. The trade sold to a top of £1290 for Limousin steer from John Bargh of Old Woodhouse with Charolais steers from the same home selling to £1270. Hereford heifers from AJ & D Knowles of Windy Hill sold to £1190 for a pair. Summering cattle continue to be in strong depend especially suckler bred cattle with 12month old Angus steers selling to £930 from SJ & NS Wood of Causeway Farm and 9 month old Limousin steers from J & DA Dickinson of Spingfield selling to £900. Larger Black and White steers were slightly easier to sell this week with younger plainer sorts still difficult to place.

Congratulations to Chris Alty of Moss House Farm for winning the prize draw of a £15 lunch voucher for lotting four or more cattle together.

OTM and Cast Cattle

OTM cattle sold to a strong trade considering the continued drop in finished cattle and the bank holiday weekend. An entry of mainly dairy cattle today saw the overall average today of 111ppk. Cast cows sold to a top price of DJ A & L Sutcliffe of Throstle Nest Farm 144.5ppk for a Blonde cow. Cast heifers sold to a top of 161.5ppk for a heifer from J & F Nutter of Manor Farm with a British Blue. Cast steers and Bulls continue to sell at a similar trade averaging 120ppk.

Calves

A good entry of 66 rearing calves and stirks this morning at Lancaster, with a ringside packed with farmer buyers. In the calf section trade was topped by CG Birkett, with a 12week Blue Bull selling to £505. Blue heifers sold to £265 & £255 from the same home. Limousin sold to £400 for a very smart bull from CR & A Baxter & Son, Middleton with a young suckler bred bull selling to £390 from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead. Others from Mesrs Dobson, Kendal sold to £350. A run of Angus bulls and heifers from JB & JB Lawson, Cockerham, saw bulls top at £385 & £380 and heifers sell to £340 & £320. Black and Whites a strong trade this morning selling to £158 for a well fleshed 9 week old, with others from regular vendor Wallbank Farms Ltd selling to £125 & £120. Best calves regularly sold in excess of £100 with nice fleshly calves £68-£90, all black and white calves forward sold to a market average of £87.

Stirks

A run of stirks from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel sold to £565 for a blue heifer with younger Angus stirks selling to £250. Angus stirks from E Lund & Son, Ingleton sold to £500 and £445.
