Store Cattle

The feel of summer was in the place with wonderful weather meaning a few less cattle forward as many people trying to get their silage. Grazing cattle continue to look a good trade but the continued drop in the finished beef price means that the larger cattle are harder to place. Cattle sold to a top price of £1270 for three Limousin from DW & NM Alderson of High Green with Cowell & Moore selling Charollais steer to £1250. Top priced heifers also came from DW & NM Alderson of High Green selling Limousin heifers to £1180. 31% of cattle forward achieved £1,000 or more.

Congratulations to DE & SM Moorhouse of Natland Hall for winning the prize draw of a £15 lunch voucher for lotting four or more cattle together.

OTM and Cast Cattle

OTM cattle sold to a strong trade considering the continued drop in finished cattle. Cast cows averaged 113ppk with cast heifers averaging 125ppk. The trade topped at 174.5ppk for a Limousin cow from DW & NM Alderson of High Green. British Blue steers sold to 169.5ppk from A & E Clarkson Ltd of Cock Hall farm with cast heifers from R Farnworth of Bank House Farm selling to 147.5ppk.

Stirks

First through the ring this morning were a run of Friesian bulls from Raby Contract Services, selling to £335 at 7m with other 6month sorts at £330. Two 6month heifers from JM & MH France, Littledale sold to £475 for a nice Angus and £455 for a Limousin. A run of Angus bulls from W Pinder Jnr, sold to £590 & £570.

Calves

With better weather, less calves forward this morning, with only 37 put before the Mid-May show judge, Peter Anderton. New vendors AJ & AJ Gibbons showed a fantastic run of 5 Lim & British Blue calves, and consequently took the top 3 spots in the show. Trade topped at £405 for a very smart 7week blue bull from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels, with others from the same home at £392, younger blue bulls slightly easier selling to £255 for 4week olds from Joylan Farms. Limousins sold well, again from AJ & AJ Gibbons, selling to £402 & £400, with a suckler bred Limousin bull from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead selling to £305. Better quality B&Ws in demand this morning selling to a top of £122 & £120 from Wallbank farms, Abbeystead. Strong B&Ws selling above £60 with all forward averaging £65.
