First Store Sale of 2014 sees all 3 Cattle Rings Busy

This first Friday sale of 2014 sees all three of the cattle rings busy at NWA Lancaster. A strong entry of 73 calves, 76 cast cows and just short of 200 store cattle, sold well with all ringsides full of buyers.

Store Cattle

A nice entry of just short of 200 Store Cattle this morning sold to a top of £1510 for a Limousin Steer from J Capstick, Whicham Hall, with all stores being met by a run-of-the-mill trade at the start of this New Year. B&W steers sold to a top of £1050 from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton, with others at £990 from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton, and averaging £782. A large number of Limousins, sold to an average £1105, with many regularly over £1200. Charollais sold to a top of £1390 from J Bargh, Old Woodhouse, followed by TE & S Ridding who had a ring full achieving £1060/head. Angus Steers sold to a top of £1260 from both TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe and J & M Cottam, Nether Kellet, with an average of £1010.

Store heifers sold to a top of £1450 for a British Blue, again from J Capstick, Whicham Hall, with other blue heifers from TJ Parkinson, Preston selling to £1280. Lim heifers sold to a top of £1150 from Messers J & BL Ellis, Hawkrigg End.

Cast Cows

OTMs were a flying trade, selling to a top of 181.5ppk for a cast heifer from ME Wannop & Sons, Heaton or £1304 (174.5ppk) for a Limousin cast cow from E Dodgson, Spital Farm. The majority of the entry was made up of Friesian cast cows which sold to a top of 139.5ppk from Messers Drinkall Bros, Catshaw Hall, with others regularly 125 – 135ppk, averaging 110ppk. Cast bulls sold to a top of 179.5ppk for a Simmental from from I Atkinson, Boon Town.

Calves

An entry of 73 calves and stirks sold to a top of £450/head for a pair of 3month old Simmental Bull Stirks from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale, who also had Sim Heifer stirks to £400/head. Of the 73 calves and stirks forward, 32 of these were B&W bulls which sold to a top of £260/head for a 10week old from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale. Younger B&W calves sold to a top of £160 from WA Ward, Ancliffe Hall, with other better quality B&Ws regularly £125 upwards. British Blues sold to a top of £400 for a bull from RT Halhead, Norbreck Farm, who had others at £300/head and heifers sold to a top of £320 from regular vendor David Wallbank, Tills Farm with other BrB heifers over £200. BrB bulls averaged £257/head and heifers £205. Limousin bulls sold to a top of £235 from J R Pye, Stalmine.
