Lancaster Monday 9/12/13 Christmas Primestock Show

Prime Lambs

A busy morning at NWA Lancaster this morning for the Christmas Show & Sale of Prime Stock. A busy show ring saw a number of regular vendors compete for the Championship rosette. Judging was very kindly conducted by Mr G Riley, who gave the Champion Rosette to a very smart pen of 5 pure Beltex lambs, weighing 43kg from ME Wannop & Sons Ltd, Heaton Hall. These later sold to M. Lomax at £120/head for Lancaster Meats on behalf of Bryson & Susan Little, Chop House Restaurant, Lancaster.

A good show of horned lambs this morning with the first prize rosette being award to D. France, Over Wyresdale, for a pen of five 44kg lambs, which later sold to £71/head.

The Mule and Masham class, saw the first prize rosette being award to WI & A Atkinson, Holme House, for a pen of 5 Mule lambs, weighing 46kg, which went on to reach a final call of £75.50.

Only a handful of Suffolk lambs put forward to show this morning saw J Bargh & Son claim the red rosette, these 42kg lambs went on to sell for £74/head.

A ring side of regular and new buyers saw lambs sell to 279ppk for the champion pen with other show pens and butchers lambs between 190-210ppk. A strong entry of quality lambs saw the overall average rise week on week to 172ppk.

Only a few ewes forward this morning reached £81/head for 3 Texel ewes. Well fleshed ewes regularly £40-£60/head. A pen of 16 Herdwick shearlings, From T & ME Longton & Son, Quernmore, sold to £54/head.

Prime Bulls

A very nice entry of cattle was put before the judge, Mr Frank Towers this morning. Of the 9 bulls forward, the first prize rosette was awarded to J & D Barton & Son, Pilling, this later sold to 230ppk or £1323/head. Bulls sold to a top of 231.5ppk from S & BM Lawrenson & Son for a Limousin, weighing in just over 500kg. Friesian bulls topped at 158.5ppk from PM & AM Ward & Son, Arkholme. An overall sale average of 193.5 for all breeds forward.

Prime Heifers

A good number of heifers forward this morning in total, with three going before the judge, the first prize rosette being award to Barbara Rayton who also claimed the Champion Rosette, this quality British Blue heifer went on to sell to the day’s top price of 320ppk, going to Butcher Paul Fairclough of Bolton. The second prize rosette was award to Kerry Foster, for a British Blue heifer, she also claimed Reserve Champion and went on to sell for 30ppk, again to Mr Fairclough. Third prize was arard to Matthew Hill, Bolton Le Sands, which went on to sell for 245.5ppk. A busy ring side full of active buyers saw heifers sell to a top of 320ppk and an overall average of 248ppk, selling to 6 different outlets.

The Casson Trophy, given to the best Limousin was awarded to Barabara Rayton for a sweet Lim heifer which went on to sell to 262ppk to AB & S Birtwistle Meats, Worsley.
